Player Move Speed -- What's the point?

I just examined the Player Move Speed in the advanced options for a new game.  The options are: "All Players", "Above Average (<12 Hrs)", "Fast (<6 Hrs)", and "Very Fast (<3 Hrs)".  If I understand this correctly then when I choose "Fast (<6 Hrs)", only opponents who have move speed less than 6hrs per move will be allowed to accept the seek, right?  These options all seem to serve to limit how slowly a game will progress.

What if I want only an opponent who has takes more than 6 hrs per move?  Currently, I would have to choose either All players or Above Average, but that still allows players who have a move speed of 2mins/move to accept the seek.  Now, I know that I'm being sort of picky and that a lot of people, Americans in general, have attention spans best measured in milliseconds, but shouldn't I be able to choose when I want to play an opponent who actually takes some time to consider their options rather than rushing to get the game over with?

Then move speed alone will not give you the degree of control you want.  A player who is playing in more than 200 games will have a slower move speed but will often make their decesions very fast.

Time control might be a better tool to focus on as those players who select a 7 day or 14 day move time may plan on doing some deep study of the game.  Or they may be very busy and not have much time to devote to their games.

mavis311,

A possible solution:

1. Create an invite only tournament.

2. Post a forum advertising the event, giving your preferred contact details.

3. Examine the stats of those that apply and select accordingly.

Long-winded I know, but you should get what you require.

Hmm... Perhaps some of these options should be added to the "Search Members" script or whatever it is.  That would save some time searching.

This is an old topic but the move speed time control is still quite a useful filter. I would very much like to see options added for <24 hours and <72 hours. I tend to prefer daily games with long 7 day or 14 day time controls, not the shorter 1 day or 3 day time controls, to give myself and my opponent some flexibility for when there are hectic period in our lives, and to reduce the numbers of games won on purely time alone. Under normal circumstances I consider it ideal to make approximately 1 move per game per day, and sometimes as relaxed as 1 move per game per 2-3 days. This is what I find to be the best combination of giving each move a healthy amount of reflection time, yet also keeping the game fresh enough in memory from the prior few days, all with the built-in insurance policy of having up to 14 days (as well as vacation mode) for those occasional unusual periods.

But I find that when I set a 14-day time control, while about 2/3 of my opponents makes moves every 1-3 days, the other 1/3 of my opponents tend to regularly wait until days 12, 13, or 14 to make a move. I can't fault them, and if I thought they were putting all that thinking time in it would actually be great, but I think for most of them it's just a game that gets pushed to the end of the queue until the expiration date approaches. So being able to set a 14-day time control daily game with an average move speed of <24 hours or <72 hours would really be the best of both worlds, if Chess.com would consider making a few adjustments to the game speed available options list.
