"first": care/don't care?

I think people who post "First" are annoying and should be banned. As should every else deliberately posting something that doesn't contribute anything to the conversation. Such as "Nth" or "easy" or somesuch.

Now, if you actually make a useful comment, and add that it's the first comment, you may be forgiven. After all, you have contributed. If the only thing you did was say "first", you have contributed nothing. If you actually wait diligently and patiently for the topic/puzzle to come around just so you can say "first"... You should seriously get away from your computer and rethink your priorities. Maybe even see a specialist.

I agree with you completely.

an additional annoyance on the same order -  is the amazing number of folks using tactics trainer who think it matters who comments first or posts first or that anyone cares to know what their percentage/score was for a particular tactic.

I agree, although I don't really care, because all the first comments keep me from seeing any giveaways or hints accidentally when I am trying to solve the puzzle.

If we get rid of the "First"s and "Easy"s then people will make a fuss about not posting giveaways. I find all posts not making a contribution annoying, but then again I find a litter of kittens annoying too Innocent

vowles_23

I can't see why it bothers people so much.

It is a fact. They were first.

Conflagration_Planet

At least you usually just have to read the word first just once, but I get sick of doing the tactics trainer, and thinking there might be some interesting posts, then just seeing the word EASY, posted over, and over, and OVER, and OVER again.

Like some people have commented above... it is annoying because it takes space away from people who really wants to contribute with something. So when I want to learn more about the puzzles (specially with people who posts other boards with other variants), I am force to dive in pages 2 or 3 and even 4 to find those things... That why I do care because the waste the time in something stupid making me waste 2-3 clicks every day.

That's for the "easy" ones too.

Also, it is a chess forum! For God's sake! It supossed to be full of people at least a little more inteligent than other forums / websites (youtube, by example), but most of you really doesn't make any effort to prove it...

So, I do care, and I think the chess.com team should do something about it

It really doesn't bother me at all. I never saw the point of it though. I just figured if its not hurting anyone its find with me....althought I always wondered what was the point. But to answer the question, I doesn't bother me.

I don't really care about "first", but what does tick me off is the hordes of mindless morons complaining about supposed flaws in the puzzle without even beginning to attempt to dream of having the merest shadow of the slightest inkling of understanding about the puzzle. Which is a pity, because I'm also often interested in figuring out the variations in the daily puzzles; and while there'll usually be reasonable, intelligent people putting up analysis, I end up having to dig through piles of crud to get to the analysis.

TL;DR: NEEEEERDRAAAAAAGE!

this i hate even more than the 'first' thing

usually, by the time I do the puzzle, Im on the 5th page, so it doesn't really bother me, but people who don't even understand the puzzle just denounce it and waste a comment by saying how stupid it was when they are the stupid ones themselves...

imo, chess.com should ban people who repeatedly comment 'Easy' or 'First' or at least delete those comments

I care.  These non-contributing posts are annoying but harmless.  They are a nuisance, puerile spam from people who apparently have nothing better to do with their time, and I wish they would be a bit more conscientious about what they post.

Should Chess.com take action?  Maybe, if they have the time, and something tells me they don't.  That is why they put out an ad for a new staff member; they're short-handed as it is.  I bet you that even after the new person gets on board, they'll still be short-staffed.  They're working hard to control costs in a difficult economy, and the products they bring to us (free chess play, videos and articles by IMs and GMs, 24/7 customer service) are not cheap.

Nonetheless, I suspect the people at Chess.com may be very interested in this poll, to see which way the winds of opinion are blowing.  It does seem that most of the spammers are non-premium members of Chess.com.

We could always call out, "ban the bozos," but the free members contribute to Chess.com in other ways.  They provide opponents for us, help swell the number of people in tournaments and matches, and for the really strong players (I do not include myself in this group), they can be as tasty as a Scooby Snack in a high-stress moment.

The only thing I can say is let's just deal with it for now, and if the spammers really get your goat, you can always send them a challenge and beat them to a pulp on the chessboard!

I truly apperciate those who take the time to analyze and explain the daily puzzle, especially the people who include an interactive board showing the variations.  It is frustrating to have to scroll through many useless "first" and "easy" posts to find something worth reading.  I wouldn't mind so much if only the first person wrote "first," but the subsequent posters who write "nth" or "easy" are truly wasting space.

You don't need to ban people to solve the problem.  Just post guidelines that expressly discourage such posts and use occasional reminders on the board itself and you will probably solve 80-90% of the problem.  There will always be a few who don't get it or who enjoy being irritating, but it's easy to ignore just a few.

To know how to answer this question, it's important to know what posting "first" actually means.   Does it really indicate that they solved it 'first' ?

I asked Chess.com if posting first meant that they won.  They said....

---------

"No, solving the daily puzzle doesn't show who won first.

Members like to post their "First" comment there as more competition, to say "hey i saw it first and i solved it first".

There is no proof what so ever that they even tried the puzzle, they may have just posted.

The puzzle doesn't have to be solved in order to post comments on that forum thread.

To some, posting "first" is fun, to others, its annoying as its not actually discussing the moves or the puzzle.

So, here we have an amazingly smart group of poeople posting that they were the "first person to post the word 'first' to a bulitine board".

Does it make me 'mad'?  No.  But it makes me sad that such brilliant people are a) so arrogant that they are blinded by simple "web forum logic"   and   b) they've taken up valuable space to share with us their ignorance and arrogance.

Perhaps they are just HFA's.

RJJB68

I really don't care about who is first. That would only be interesting when everyone would start at the same time. I wish they would stop it. It clutters interesting notes/comments about a puzzle.

ojb

I would never do it, it seems pointless.. first posting is certainly frowned on in the wider world of internet forums.. it's also pretty annoying scrolling past the 'first's and 'second's to get to the actual discussion.

bran_e_murray

Don't care. Actually, I kind of like it because there never fails to be a chorus of replies to the effect of "Who cares if you're first? Your mother must be a baboon! And you SUCK, too!" I get a lot of good giggles over how worked up people get when someone posts "first."

Gert-Jan

care

It's annoying and pointless

nase

Writing first isn't a problem. That's simply how online forums work.  Believe it or not, some people really enjoy that.  If you can't stand it, then online forums aren't your thing.

The problem for me however is that it doesn't stop there.  People keep on posting pointless comments like easy eventhough it's not.  Or stupid puzzle, or black screwed up, etc.  All without making a point.  And that's make is quite annoying to actually find post that explain or try to teach something.

pointsless comments are part of online fora, I get that.  I even do it myself.  I just find people exagerating on the daily puzzle topics.

alanb123

Don't care.

First!

boymaster

Fun Fact: The "first" things? Stupidity. They post it in daily puzzles, but the DAILY PUZZLE is always the first post. Unless you make a forum that is titled, FIRST.

Should they use Second?

BenTal

There may be a simple solution to this. Why not arrange the posts with the most recent at the top? Alternatively, one could have a "thanks" button to allow users to rate how helpful a post is, with the most helpful being highlighted at the top. These options are both open to abuse, but might perhaps improve the value of the daily puzzle to those who wish to learn from it.

It seems unreasonably to expect someone to check the posts every day and purge the pointless ones (I think this has been tried in the past). For me it is a shame, because I am sure that one of the reasons why so many people post questions that have already been answered is that many people can't be bothered to read through all of the less helpful comments.

One other point to remember is that this service is being provided for free. I, for one, am grateful for that, regardless of the issues we are discussing here.

Hawkinspal

what annoys me is the people posting 'first' push the good comments way back
