Resignation Etiquette???

Speaking of baseball, who was the guy on here who was a big fan of Chone Figgins? That hasn't worked out well for Seattle at all...

Life is too short to complain to people because they do not resign. There are other things to do with your time.

Sometimes you can do constructive and fun things.

I have invented some things one can do in such a situation and these things you can do can be fun and constructive.

Elubas

Well, I think you still should try to find accurate ideas, usually not relying on traps. In any case, the benefit I get from having my opponent show me the technical process in bad positions and the training of my resourcefulness outweighs the "attitude" of playing swindle chess -- something that a good player should know to only do in certain circumstances anyway. As I said, usually it's bad to play for traps, even when in a position that is already very bad as it can often just make the win easier.

Of course, we all draw the line differently, and we should be ok with that. Maybe you don't consider it worth to play on in a certain position, but your opponent has his own reasons to justify that it is. It's not always about what you think.

Elubas, who is advocating "swindle chess" ???? [or playing for traps]

Elubas

I don't, but ozzie's teacher is saying that this is inevitable it seems (when you are down a piece).

ponz111

Elubas, I read the post on what ozzie's teacher was advocating and it definitely was NOT "swindle chess"  In fact, he was suggesting just the opposite!!

Elubas

Well, the GM was saying not to play out the position at all, but that if you were to play out the position, you would play swindle chess, and that is not how I think playing on a piece down should be approached.

Re: Masters not knowing bishop and knight mate: It has happened. One example: Robert Kempinski (24980 vs Vladimir Epishen (2567), Bundesliga, Germany, 2001.

Elubas

It's happened like a million times lol.

ponz111

Yes, the grandmaster was saying not to play out that kind of  position at all--he was saying to resign such a position.

To not resign and play swindle chess are opposites .  Why put words in his mouth which are the opposite of what he was saying? He certainly was NOT advocating swindle chess!

What you might do in a situation has nothing to do with what the grandmaster was saying!

Elubas

The key is "but that if you were to play out the position" -- he's not saying he would, but if he were to, if they forced him to play it out -- swindle chess is what he would do.

For him not to would seem to contradict what he was saying.

TheOldReb

Good players know when to resign, and they do.

ponz111

Elubus, NO NO NO. The grandmaster did not say to play out such a postion or that he would play out such a position.  I know from my own exprience that often a high rated player does not try to do a swindlewhen he drops a piece.

Why do you assume what this grandmaster would do and why do you assume the grandmaster would or might play out a position trying to use a swindle when ,in fact, the grandmaster was advocating just the opposite--he was advocating to resign!

What you are doing is to assume the grandmaster would do just the opposite of what he was advocating and then making a case against that assumption.

Yeah...that was the same guy who has been posting the baseball player quotes.  He's kind of an idiot.

ponz111

Elubas, you have been using a logical fallacy called "strawman"  You put forth a position that is very easy to knock down and say that your opponent has this position when the fact is-he does not have that position and often has the opposite of your strawman argument.

It is a way to try and discredit somebody by stating they have a position that you know they do not have.

Interesting - but can you remember the name?

A new thread has started up .......

Place a wire to opponents chair that allows one to shock them only once a move. (for situations like they do not resign) Several players are signing up for it, about time.  lol

i think the motive for nonresignation is to get revenge by slowing down your victory.  I see this on poker websites too.  also you could die, or simply forget to play, or lose your access to the internet and they could win on time...

Yes, it's always possible that your opponent will croak before he can finish the game. That's why a solid training program for internet chess should always include vitamins and exercise.
