You don't really believe that do you? The staff have said themselves they need to build up a significant pool of games to be used as evidence of cheating in order to ban someone. They're not going to ban someone if that person used an engine for only one nights playing.

And by the way, I take it by Eric and the staff creating cheating topics and joining in the discussion themselves that their supposed "policy" of not allowing any cheating dicussion on the main public forums isn't supposed to be taken seriously anymore.

I joined this site approximately three weeks ago, after getting my first pc. It's been 17 years since I played chess. I don't have a UCSF rating or any rating for that matter. I am not a pro or pretend to be, I just love this game. If your system of tracking and banning players works then use it, anyone that has have a brain would not walk and talk about numbers if there cheating to get them. I just checked my stats I have lost 80% of my games since I joined. But you want to know something those 20% that I won sure felt good. That's why I play this game.......

Did Liz post any articles? If so, what will happen to them?

No, I know it wasn't a one time offence... and like I said before it is inexcusable... and again saying I understand the strong stance taken by staff and I support it. He is a good friend here... and is very remorseful and feels rotten for letting down many members, staff and himself. I still think he is a great guy. His hard work towards the site for no financial gain shows the good side of him...

Ok, sorry I mis-understood your statement.

I personally don't understand why anyone wants to cheat. Well I understand why they want to, because to boost their ratings... but I don't understand why they don't want to do it the honest way... why the points matter that much to them... I guess for glory and to boost their egos. But I wouldn't detest anyone for it... it's not like they murdered anyone. Having said that, I fully support Erik's hard-core crack-down approach to stamping out cheating as long as no innocents are chucked out in the process... I am trusting there isn't?

What if someone just played the best game of her/his life? A true perfect game? Will they be "caught" for "cheating"?

Avatar of Kupov

I don't think the level of play is the deciding factor when it comes  to discovering whether a player is cheating or not.

We have strong (titled) players here who are playing very strong chess and are not suspected of cheating.

Players who are banned for cheating are not banned on the basis of one game. Many games must be tried and tested. There is always a 99.9999% certainty before chess.com decides to ban anyone.

While I don't disagree with you, I would like to know how you know that.

Maybe if someone wanted to still play chess, they would only be able to play unrated matches; maybe they could have a graphic next to their name or something? Because I have a feiling that you find the I.P. and we never hear from them again.

False, the I.P. can be comprimised, there are a number of programs available that will allow you to do this, My favourite is the one that changes/disguises your I.P. to a legitimate one, anywhere in the world every 3 mins.

I know of a couple of people on chess.com that have been booted for cheating & are now back in, they have changed, but mind you I will not waste my time playing them.

They are addicted... They are intoxicated by the thrill of winning to the point where they want it more and more. This "want" becomes a "need" and they pursue by any means necessary. Cheating is the most direct way to attain this high...

Bit melodromatic, don't you think Anthony?  A need?  No, no.  What would Maslow think?
