Road to 1800 - accountability thread.

I have the goal of reaching 1800 in about 2-3 months, while you may say “that’s not very realistic, you are only 1200” you should know that I can and do beat 1800s and play on their level in unrated online games and at my local chess club. I believe my main problem/reason I’m not 1800 is because I either underestimate my opponents to wildly or it’s because I havnt sat down and had a big session where I play chess. Either way, I have resources and have begun training to improve even further. I’m going to study 5 hours a day (all the days I have the time) and try to finish my resources by the end of the 2-3 month period.
-The resources I am using:
How To Reassess Your Chess (4th edition) - Jeremy Silman
Chess (puzzle book) - Lazlo Polgar
Improve Your Chess Tactics (2024 edition) - Yakov Neishtadt
Chess.com videos and Lichess studies.
YouTube videos.
I have other resources that I’m not going to be using because they arnt right for my level.
I’m going to train my openings, endgames, tactics, and understanding of imbalances and positional ideas until I finish these book, then I will push to 1800.

Hey! Sorry I haven’t been keeping up with the thread, however I have been keeping up on improving 💪 I’ve been playing games, getting better at using my time, gaining rating, and learning lots from my books! I’ll add a more detailed description later but right now I’m preparing for a tournament on June 16th-17th
O-O

I have seen a few of these "accountability threads" they're interesting. If this helps you feel better it took me about 3 months to go from 1500 to 1800 rapid which means it's definitely possible and it's not an unrealistic goal.

In fact I love the ambition reminds me of how I was, also I never read a chess book nor watch chess YouTube. I did a lot of puzzles, played games, and reviewed every single one. I am curious on what the detailed description will be. If you have any questions message me I would love to help if I can.

now you are ~1450 and had a win rate of 62%

i think you would easily go to 1600 or even 1650

if you can go beyond 1800 in months, it must have something to do with your fast growing rather than simply underestimated elo

In real life, over-the-board tournament ratings (Canadian Chess Federation, a FIDE member) I was stuck at around 1500 for more than a year, with my rating going up and down like a yo-yo. It was very discouraging.

I finally decided that I didn't CARE anymore. No more rating goals. I would continue to play tournament chess whenever I could, but only for fun.

Within a year, I passed 1800 on the rating list. In two years, I was getting tournament performance ratings of 2100 and better (although my published rating never reach that figure).

Okay, here’s a note of what I’ve been doing for the past couple of weeks. A lot of days I didn’t study or train at all because I was VERY busy however for the past 10 days I’ve been working to prepare for my upcoming OTB tournament. It’s a classical tournament 90 minutes with a 30 second delay- and I’m playing on the 2 day schedule with a total of 5 rounds. To prepare for this tournament I want to finish 2 of my chess books, watch quite a few good endgame videos, and study and memorize opening lines like crazy. One of my main faults when I did this same tournament during the winter a few months ago is that even though I had an advantage and was quite clearly winning all of my games (all though I had a lot worse understanding of what that was back then) in half my games I made an awful error that completely turned my game to losing or drawn. This was a problem I had in longer form games but included in blitz aswell, when I believed I was winning I would play too quickly and lose patience. I’ve been working hard to fix this and have been doing a decent job at spending my time in longer form games. I’ve changed what training I wanted to do slightly but it’s mostly the same. I’ve definitely got a lot better recently but I know there is still so much room for growth, any advice or material you would suggest would be very much appreciated. I’m currently having a hard time finding a good book that covers all the lines in depth of the last 2 openings in my repertoire. If anybody knows a good book for the King’s Indian Attack (preferably an advanced book) and or for the modern Scandinavian (2…Nf6) [also preferably advanced] I was really appreciate the insight. Of course I have been looking on my own and found a great book I plan on reading for the King’s Indian defense. My goal for the upcoming tournament is 3.5/5 points (1 point higher than my previous score), the section I’m playing in is scholastic U1200 (I’m 16), I still plan on using this thread to show and log my improvement but I think my goal of 1800 isn’t really what I’m caring about right now, I know that I will soon be skilled enough to reach that rating once I finish the training I have set up. Anyways I appreciate you reading and all of your guys valuable insights, if you have any more please feel free to share them! Best of luck in your games <3

I would also like to note that I havnt been able to keep up with the unrealistic 5 hours of study a day, since I’ve been busy. 1-3 hours a day usually.

don't lie , busy doesnt mean you had to skip your initial plans. This IS THE ACCOUNTABILITY THREAD

yeah well I had more time back then. I cannot study 5 hours a day at this point in time- however I still can study a lot and will still get my original goal of 1800, but right now my goal is 3.5/5 points in my tournament
