Sound Effects on Live Chess?

Sort:

hey all. we know we need some sound effects for live chess. here is my question: what kind of sounds would you like?

for moves i assume we'll do something that sounds like a move on a board.

but for things like CHECK, GAME OVER, DRAW request, etc, would you like to hear different beeps and buzzes? or would you like to hear a voice say "draw request", etc.

let me know what you think!?

I would rather it say say check, checkmate, draw or such and such resigns and so on....Cool

An on/off toggle would be nice because I often listen to music while playing.  The specific sounds used don't matter to me too much.

I vote for different (smooth) beeps. I'm afraid that voices could result disturbing or annoying.

yeah, I say different beeps or sounds for game over, when a move is played, and when draw is offered. I vote no voices.
TonightOnly

I agree that they should be techno-like sounds. Something smooth and liquid, not annoying. I wouldn't really like voices.

I don't think check should be announced at all. I find it disturbing and could slow up someone's computer. If you are worried about a beginner not recognizing it, maybe just a little ding or whatever for trying to make an illegal move (i.e. not taking care of the check).

please erik, NO voices please... it's cheap...

Worst case scenario: a deep bass voice echoes over your internet line"CHECK!!!!!!!!!". Shades of the wizard of oz(pay no attention to that man(eric_)behind the curtain. Bring me my brown pants!(only someone who watches larry the cable guy and company will get that!  best case scenario: the dulcet tones of a lovely sounding soprano lightly whispers "check" in your ear(or check, dear{mate, dear?}. How about a teamspeak scenario where you can check into a room at live chess, play a game and talk back and forth with someone who is also wearing headphones? O-possibilites for abusing that are also there-nvm.

kinda embarassing lol but the check sound is not just for beginners :P i can recognize a check but when ur playing a fast game (2 min) and theres a discovered check it sometimes takes 5 sec to realize it if its really subtle.

I agree that you should be able to turn all sounds on/off and if possible allow each specific sound to be turned on/off. if you're not going to be doing voices, the sounds should represent the action. It would be helpful to make the message really obvious in either case (if sounds are off). maybe have a small but seperate 'window' for requests (such as new game, draw, resign, etc) so you dont miss it if you are changing options in the control panel.

how about the sound of a toilet flushing whenever I resign... since that all that seems to happen when i play blitz.

I do like the soft click of a piece hitting the board when my opponent moves.

Remember that old pacman game over sound? That might make a nice checkmate noise!Laughing

erik

ok :) sounds like most people don't like voices.

what would you like to hear for:

- check

- chat message received

- draw offer

- game over (lose / win different?)

- challenge received

i'd love some ideas :)

batgirl
whispered... in the sounds of silence.

Startrek style computer voice would be great!

You should do voices like golf announcers. You know, how they whisper (Batgirl). Or here's a GREAT idea for you: the voice of Stephen Hawking! He could say, like, "HEY STUPID, DISCOVERED CHECK. IN THE HISTORY OF THE UNIVERSE THIS IS THE 1,237,338, 766TH DISCOVERED CHECK." I would like that.

Here are some quotes that I can get some stars to voiceover for the game:

Mr. T: "I pity the fool in check!"

Arnold: "I'll be checked."

Mel Brooks: "It's good to be the King."

Wesley Snipes: "Always bet on black."

Hulk Hogan: "What are you gonna do when my bishop forks you, brother!"

Al Gore: "I'll play green."

George W. Bush: "How does the horsey move?"

Hillary Clinton: "Queen me."

Bill Clinton: "Queen me."

Sigourney Weaver: "In space, no one can hear you check."

Paris Hilton: "How does the horsey move? That's hot."

Lindsay Lohan: "ahoekrlhw"

Don Imus: COMMENT ABOUT THE BLACK PIECES REMOVED

Dwight Shrute: "Fact: chess pieces can become lodged in the windpipe of a small child. Be sure to grease the chess pieces first so they slip down the throat smoothly and safely."

Woody Allen: "I get the distinct feeling, and it's a feeling I know, that the pawns are ganging up on me."

God: "Check, and mate." (On first move.)

Give me a call. We'll work out the specifics.

Could there also be an option to 'turn off alerts' so that beginners could be alerted to check and illegal moves etc by noises but advanced players won't. Just a thought (I don't like noises).
StacyBearden
I don't think this is the type of helpful advice Erik wanted, but hey, it's advice nonetheless. Seriously: some type of click or subtle beep would be more than enough for me.

hahahahhahaah...!

Silence, noise will get me fired...

For checking, how about various sounds, e.g. when a Knight checks, a sword clash sound; when a Bishop checks, a Gregorian chant; when a Rook checks, cannon fire; when a Queen checks, some king of "Off with his head" statement; when a pawn checks, a simple slicing of an assassin's knife noise.
Patzer24
Would be fun, but not practical.
