Stalling problem in live games

I have recently witnessed awful lot of bad sportmanship in the site. I feel like chess games should be played untill checkmate, but some of my opponents use this to exhibit inappropriate behaviour. There have been numerous incidents where my opponent has outplayed me and has mate in one. However, instead of checkmating and ending the game, they like to wait untill the last seconds of their time, running the clock 30 - 60 seconds, simply wasting time.

I think this is really bad sportmanship (happening even at high level), which the site should not tolerate. I definitely recommend that this behaviour would more often lead to warnings or bans. I am not sure if Chess.com is currently taking necessary actions to this matter.

Just resign?

Some consider it disrespectful not to resign when you know they’ve won. As payback they will stall to mock you.

Well this my personal opinion, but I think that in chess the more sportmanship is expected from winner of the game. So, in my mind it is MUCH worse when the player stalling the game is the winner. This problem may not be as common as when the losing side is stalling, but more severe.

Sure, I could just resign if A) I would know that my opponent will stall the game, and B) if I knew that the opponent would get a warning from disrespectful behaviour. After all, chess is game of sportmanship, which the site also advocates, so it is important that good sportmanship is also required from the winner.

Also, for the sake of clarity, I would like to point out that not resigning in a losing position or not checkmating, but instead, say promoting 6 queens, is totally fine as long as you are making moves in reasonable time. I have no issues with either of those cases.

I’m so confused. Just resign when it’s mate in one? I do that anyway.

You are not understanding the problem. The problem is not about resigning but about bad sportmanship. As you already mentioned, some player "will stall to mock you". This is not behaviour that should be tolerated. Sure, you could just always resign and never face this problem. But I like checkmating my oponents (don't you too?), and I also like to give my opponents chance do so. So instead of just avoiding the problem of bad sportmanship I think we can do better than that. I think we the players of Chess.com should have the right to demand some respect from the winning side as well.

I suppose it’s a matter of perspective. Me personally, prefer if my opponents resign, because then I know, that they know, that I know how to win, and have a win. When it’s something as obvious as M1 or if I’m up 20 material and they don’t resign it (sometimes) makes me feel like they don’t think I can get the win.

I do understand where you are coming from though, and it is bad sportsmanship from your opponent. However I don’t think it is bad enough to do anything about it. You have the option to resign so waiting there and letting them be a bad sport to you for longer is your choice. However perhaps chess.com could enlist a “bad sportsmanship” system, where after a game a player can mention if the other was a good or bad sport. Chess.com could keep track of this and if there is a high quantity (compared to games played) of bad sportsmanship notices then chess.com could give them some sort of warning, or mention. And perhaps, if they receive a lot of good sportsmanship notices, said player could receive some kind of small reward, 30- minute access to diamond, a discount, some kind of trophy, just to motivate good sportsmanship.
