Stars in the chess.com sky

When you joined the chess.com family you aligned yourself with a fascinating bunch of individuals. You only have to read a few blogs—or even swap ideas during a game—to realise just how diverse and entertaining our friends/opponents (friendly opponents?) can be.

But even among such a group there are stars.

People like batgirl and the prolific BillWall inform and entertain; pawnpusher—sadly, no longer a member—had the ability to keep coming up with new, offbeat ideas; Pistoleer is funny, original and has a wicked eye for a sacrifice; and so the list could go on.

This morning, browsing the blogs, I realised we have a new star in our firmament. He is chuckg99 from Tampa, Florida and, in quick succession, he posted three items to his blog. He has been a member for only a week.

There's no doubt he can write and there's no doubt he can play chess but what makes his blog interesting to me is that he is looking to add 300 points to his USCF rating. Unlike most of us, he doesn't want to go from 1200-1500 or from 1600-1900—he wants to reach 2350 and an FM title.

As I read his posts I realised that the things he was saying about his own search for improvement also relate to my own quest—and this at an age when I had just about conceded that I really wasn't likely to get any better. Maybe there's still hope for an old dog to learn some new tricks.

Read his blog, read his profile, and see what you think.

When I started to write this I intended to post it in my own blog but realised that there are many chess.com stars who should be mentioned, so it became a Forum thread instead. Why not add your own thoughts to this list?

  • Who are the people who caught your attention?

  • What do you like about them?

  • Who are the top players or the top entertainers?

There is already the option of voting for them in the monthly trophy awards, of course but since almost nobody votes there, this is a chance to list your favourites and friends.

I find kenytiger's content to be the most interesting.  His blog is the only one I check regularly.
erik
i noticed the same person - very interesting indeed! i'll be watching his progress.
killGoose
LOL for marysson. just lol.
Rabid_Dog
In the Chess com diaspora Cheater1 is a Brown Dwarf.  Well, something brownish anyway...
Rael

If we're mainly talking excellence in blogs, then I have to put forth the following two fellas. Billwall and Batgirl have already gotten a metion, and of course, they're indispensable, but these two boys are also contenders...

KurtGodden

Mr. Godden puts a great deal of work into his blog - it's all original material; and he's unpredicatble - this week it's history, next week it's humour. I encourage all of you to check out his silly chess version of the Devil's Dictionary - worth many LOL's, to be sure.

Loomis

Loomis is a high rated contributer with a very interesting commitment - everything he presents to you, all of the games, all of the ideas, arise from his own personal experience. This guy is better at chess than I'll ever be capable of, and yet he's notably humble (in his latest blog, he talks about how he still doesn't quite understand weak squares - something the most of us can relate to - but it's simply amazing that someone at his level would even admit to some kind of blind spot).

Loomis and KurtGodden are two of the classiest gentlemen you'll come across on Chess.com. They both put a lot of effort into insuring that their blog posts are top notch. Don't miss them!

Thanks, Rael.  That's exactly the kind of input I was hoping for with this thread.

likesforests

For his very informative blogs and taking the time to advise novice players (like me) even though he is training for the World Open.  Now that's a class act.

Thundercracker

I would like to nominate:

 SonofPearl

Provides good event coverage and other news articles.

 Reb

A good player not afraid to speak his mind and dispense out HOGWASH comments when he feels the posts merit it.

Also like the input from Azoth, Nenko and Rael. Also a pat on the back for people providing good puzzles. Don't mind easy or very hard ones if good or the ocassional really bad one if they make me laugh (pedro823).

Rael
I've heard this "Dozy" guy is pretty cool too. Or so they say.

Cool Shucks, Rael.  Now I'm blushing...

Loomis

likesforests content is always great and I hope that when the World Open is finished he's got more stuff to share with us.

Kurt Godden is simply some kind of writing genius. That's probably an overstatement, but writers of his quality don't often grace the Internet, we're lucky to have him.

SonOfPearl is terrific for keeping appraised of big time tournament action and his blog posts are good too.

For various reasons I enjoy the contributions of Rael, StacyBearden, Tonydal.

Those are my diamonds in the rough. I know I'm forgetting a few, but there you go.
