I'll ask again.  This is an honest to god question.  Aside from a being speedier by a nose, what does Chrome offer that other browsers don't?  In other words, what would make me want to switch?

Erik?  Anybody?

it's not speedier by a nose, it's significantly faster.

I appreciate the reply, but that didn't answer the question.  :)

i wasn't answering your question, i was correcting your statement about it's speed :) you trivialized the speed difference, and i'm reiterating that it isn't trial at all. aside from meaningful speed differences and perhaps a more pleasing streamlined interface, there is no other reason.

I had done a post on Chrome some time ago.  -Google Chromeby

It's leaner, with a cleaner interface, less cluttered etc... much better than IE7 and Firefox both of which I found too slow. I am using WindowsXP and there's no comparison in my opinion, and it takes just a couple of minutes to download.

It is currently the fastest browser, no doubt, but it was NOT "leaner"  the last time I tried it - it was a resource hog - with two programs constantly running in the background (one is updater, another is probably preloader - one of the reasons for its speed) even when the browser is not running - I don't know whether they have changed that in the recent version or not. Firefox has the smallest memory footprint.

Well, if I dont read any bug report in this forum topic in the next couple of weeks, I might try it again for the 4th time Cool

....I haven't had this problem, fortunately.

If you got to google.com/support/chrome under "Getting started: Keyboard and
mouse shortcuts" you will find a nice list of Chrome tips.

As far as I know, Chrome is the most secure browser. Each tab runs as its own job so you will see multiple chrome jobs in the task manager. The reason to do this is if one tab/website is corrupt or fails, the other tabs are not affected.

Yes, it seems faster to me, but this is not why I switched from Firefox (still loaded). I like the cleaner interface. I see more of the webpage and less browser.

chrome is good... but i prefer to use explorer 8

Why? The German government has warned that it is unsafe to use IE; and I'm not joking.

Chrome is so secure that it won't even let me pick up my chess.com emails. I get a message saying more-or-less that "the data on this page is insecure" but allows me no override.

I love my Firefox but it takes so long to load that I welcomed a switch to Chrome. I found equivalents to most of my Firefox extensions there (Adthwart, Xmarks, WOT, Read It Later, and so on) but miss a couple of others.

I'm using Chrome right now, but considering moving back to Firefox. I had been using Firefox until Chrome was able to use extensions, namely the ad-block capability. I prefer the simple, minimal GUI, but I have to say the adblock for Chrome isn't nearly as effective as Firefox, and any speed increase is negligible.

All in all, I'd call it a toss-up, but hands down they both beat IE8.

I can't see what I am typing in this box in chrome I had to come back into firefox to type this message. I was going to say that I am going to give chrome a try and see how it goes. currently firefox 1 - 0 chrome

As of January 2010(Wikipedia)

Internet Explorer     58.69%
Firefox                   28.04
Chrome                    5.63
Safari                       4.97
Opera                       2.05

Other                       1.32

I'm surprised by these statistics, although I think Chrome will gain quite a bit
this year.  Wikipedia has a cool pie chart, but I don't know how to generate
one.

Another surprising statistic(Wikipedia)

IE6     32.28%
IE7     27.11
IE8     35.88

I use IE6 some still but Youtube is phasing it out soon.

Not just Youtube, but EVERY google webpage... IE6 is SERIOUSLY flawed, it should not be used under ANY circumstance. Seriously, take it off your computer and use IE8, its MUCH more secure.

dsarkar

Windows 98! wow! what is your hardware configuration?

zankfrappa

If 32.28% of IE users still opt for IE6 one has to wonder what is not so great
about IE7 and IE8.

I just switched to chrome, and when using chrome with live chess, the resign button doesn't work. Also, it doesn't let me make my move before its my turn (useful on forced variations and in bullet chess)

Just kidding. I do have windows 98 and windows 3.11 running but in emulation. Evil ex got the dedicated 98 and 3.11 machines. Divorces are like that.

That divorce settlement must have set you back a pretty packet - and Johnny Castaway sucks in emulation.

I have tried using Chrome for 6 hours today.

Observations:

1. I do not like the tab like, top of the page display.

2. The view window is larger but cuts the ability to use my browser to do other searches when I want to go on the internet and read about a given topic. There may be a way to do it but I have not found it other than re-open Chrome in a new window. With IE 7 all I have to do is open another tab and select my browser to do a search in Google and everything is on the same page

Do the same in Chrome: just click on the + to the right of the tabs to open a new tab.
