Playing Chess online in the year 2000

I played online back around the year 2000 when I was at University. I remember one dreadful site called pogo.com, but there were not many choices and it was a good laugh. If I remember right I got to around 1650 blitz online there and another site, maybe yahoo Chess or something. the playing experience was a joke compared to today, I don't think there was any cheat detection even. Also all it took was to buy a few books and you'd smash the competition. I'd be interested to hear about other people's experiences playing online on crap sites in the early days of online chess.

I was self taught thru playing Chessmaster. Good times. Had a Gameknot account where I actually did well lol.

The game is vastly different nowadays with engines and information technology.
