Chess mentor was touted as the next best thing in those days with even Silman waxing lyrical.  It could have prevented the nCoV for all we know.

But that's OK.  We have flairs and badges now.

I think I know what happened now.  Erik has sold off the original Chess Mentor program and no longer owns the rights to any of the original lessons.  While the original CDs are useless since they won't play on a modern Windows computer (there was a problem with the anticopying code that allowed hacking and Microsoft put a stop to it), there is a new downloadable version that might just work on Windows 10.  Any one who actually knows how all this digital stuff works please feel free to comment since I am only guessing here.  Kind of sounds logical though, doesn't it?  First Chess Mentor gets a name change to Lessons, and then all the pre Erik content disappears.

Or maybe not guys, the link to the online version of Chess Mentor takes you to Chess.com...sigh.

Should have been a major announcement on this site, no?   Or did we miss it?

Gym hunk guy... Chuck Norris?! But whatever the situation Profit and Greed will be the reason, as usual. Once, the Chess was the main thing. Now is about Ads and Premium Membership.

fairytalelion

Maybe Magnus will buy the rights to Chess Mentor, yes?

I'm also hugely disappointed by the removal of the old lessons. I've written to chess.com regarding this. Let's see what they have to say about it.

Send Erik a message then and cancel your premium's auto renewal.  Support will want to know why you are canceling your premium account (It doesn't actually cancel it, it just cancels the auto renewal.  Your membership will still stay premium until it runs out.  I used to do this on a yearly basis because I despise auto renewal).  Tell support you won't renew until Erik brings back the Old Lessons.  If enough folks do this, he might change his mind.  Settings>Account/payment>Manage account>Cancel premium.  Let Erik know we're mad as hell and not going to take it anymore!

I don't get why you want back lessons you have already done, is not having new content better?

antisunechess

There were so many hundreds of lessons, that it would be impossible to absorb all that they had to teach on one trip through them. I myself reset all the lessons just a couple of weeks ago so that I could start over and do them more systematically. Chesstempo.com calls this spaced repetition.

BTW, chesstempo is a great site, costs $35, and doesn't try to screw its members by taking stuff away.
