Are you agreeing with boots9548 that people who hit on others here are pathetic and sad? If a person is too afraid to do it in real life, then they shouldn't do it here. Also, if people get harassment charges for doing something, then shouldn't it tell them they're doing something wrong? Sure, maybe catcalls work and it gets the girl, but sometimes theft works too and someone gets a stolen item. It's still wrong.
As far as finding a chess player on a dating site, that's just a bonus. It's like playing chess here and a little magic happens and two people begin to date. It happens, but it isn't forced. Just like it is wrong to try and get people to play chess on a dating site when all they want to do is find a date.
Although the person that started this thread probably intended to create debate, this issue does need to be addressed.
Catcalls are wrong? Says you. And that's the point. It's wrong because you said so. That's all the basis you have is "well I think it's wrong, so it's wrong." I know of a marriage and happy family (2 kids so far, 1 this year) that resulted from a catcall. Hell, whistle at me and I'll wink.
And everyone who gets a harassment charge is doing something wrong? That is laughable. Innocent people catch charges EVERY DAY. I work at a detention center so I know a little something about it. The whole issue is a pendulum. Sexual harrassment was commonplace. To eradicate it we created an atmosphere of pure terror for males in the workplace. Baseless accusations could get you fired. Now we're starting to come back to center where it's not taboo to actually meet your mate at your job anymore (that's what I did!).
It is my sincere hope you are eventually able to discern between what is right, what is wrong, and what is simply your opinion.
I keep wondering if "Little Miss Sunshine" even knows that her picture is being used as an avatar. Would she approve? If someone places their picture somewhere on the internet is it fair game for anyone to use? Does this mean there may be someone out there using my picture? If so, why?
i've found most of the guys here on this site to be nice and polite but I did have one conversation which freaked me out:

Your right Ray I am not anyones moral guardian by any means. Lets just say I am an advocate of common sense. I have heard stories of members who live somewhere like washington hitting on a girl who lives in florida. Does anyone else find that ridiculous,or just me? Why hit on a girl who lives hundreds of miles away from you, whom you will more than likely never get anywhere with vs. hitting on girls who live in the same city you do that you might actually get somewhere with. Please someone explain the logic in this too me I am dying to know.

I think if you post a photo of someone not you, and it is a private person or relatively unknown personality, then you are odd and the act (be it legal or allowable or against site rules or not) displays weirdness. There was a man on here who kept copying and using the photo of a real woman player on this site he had a crush on... very odd, creepy and he got stern warnings from the chess.com mods to stop it or be banned.
But if someone uses a photo of a really famous person -- Angelina Jolie or Brad Pitt, say; or a famous fictional character, like the person here who uses the sci-fi character Illyria -- I'm not sure there's a problem, in that they are so famous or obviously actors/models, that the vast majority of people would know get it that this was fandom or homage.
But quite frankly, people on here post photos to engage, enrage, irritate, excite, spook, invite, suggest, revere.... you name it.... I don't think it's a big deal, so long as a private person is not being imitated or harrassed by it. It's all about the chess game in the end... or should be.
(That said. I won't play people whose images really freak me out -- like the one with Osama Bin Laden's photo and the screenname "Jesus" -- too much for me).
I like to play chess. Doesn't matter to me who my opponent is, I just like to play. I joined chess.com to play chess. Although I am a little busy with college and remodeling my home and work, I still love to play.
For those who are looking to flirt, pickup women/men or whatever, go somewhere else. Let's just play chess.
I actually feel embarrassed for the girls not merely because they can't get any peace, but also because of how bad most of the guys on here are at flirting

It's not all that strange. I met my wife via the internet. I didn't "hit" on her, but we discovered that we enjoyed communicating and I eventually travelled hundreds of miles to meet her in person. One thing led to another...
Beyond that, is every conversation between a man and a woman that is not about chess necessarily flirting? Is it wrong to make platonic friends here?

It's not desperate, it's called initiative. You never know what can happen, "Hey beautiful" could lead to an "I do" later on. lol, i had to post on this one. I mostly play chess with women on this site. i find i have better conversations with them. i previously posted that if i beat a man, they accuse me of cheating. also let me add this tidbit; it is hard to find a pretty lady in the real world that plays chess. i understand why a chess dude would want to meet a cute chess playing girl. odds are they may have more in common. i have found that there are many nice, cute great playing chess ladies on this site. that is how i treat them, as ladies. fellas if you treat them as such, they may not mind the added special attention. i might add that i am receiving online suggestions for my game from a very nice lady. i really appreciate it. this is a great place to socialize with people that we have something in common with. lets enjoy it.

You make a good point Echo7, but at some point, some poor, innocent, beautiful young (or otherwise) lady must have suffered through inept flirtation before somebody got the hang of it. Why not kill two birds with one stone? (learn chess AND flirtation, I mean). Very efficient...and that's good chess.

Your advice applies to you as well. It is your opinion that catcalling is not wrong.
It is wrong because society (in the US at least) deems it so. It falls under sexual harassment.
