I keep wondering if "Little Miss Sunshine" even knows that her picture is being used as an avatar. Would she approve? If someone places their picture somewhere on the internet is it fair game for anyone to use? Does this mean there may be someone out there using my picture? If so, why?

I think if you post a photo of someone not you, and it is a private person or relatively unknown personality, then you are odd and the act (be it legal or allowable or against site rules or not) displays weirdness. There was a man on here who kept copying and using the photo of a real woman player on this site he had a crush on... very odd, creepy and he got stern warnings from the chess.com mods to stop it or be banned.

But if someone uses a photo of a really famous person -- Angelina Jolie or Brad Pitt, say; or a famous fictional character, like the person here who uses the sci-fi character Illyria -- I'm not sure there's a problem, in that they are so famous or obviously actors/models, that the vast majority of people would know get it that this was fandom or homage.

But quite frankly, people on here post photos to engage, enrage, irritate, excite, spook, invite, suggest, revere.... you name it.... I don't think it's a big deal, so long as a private person is not being imitated or harrassed by it. It's all about the chess game in the end... or should be.

(That said. I won't play people whose images really freak me out -- like the one with Osama Bin Laden's photo and the screenname "Jesus" -- too much for me).

be it angela jolie, brad pitt, urself or in my case model from deal or no deal, so what, ur avitar is ur avitar

I like to play chess.  Doesn't matter to me who my opponent is, I just like to play.  I joined chess.com to play chess.  Although I am a little busy with college and remodeling my home and work, I still love to play.

For those who are looking to flirt, pickup women/men or whatever, go somewhere else.  Let's just play chess.

i agree. well i do like to trah talk (not trashy talk)

This totally reminds me of a Chris Rock joke.  If he walked around in a police uniform, and people ran up to him asking for help, he would act insulted because they were assuming that he was a cop.

Wow, what a suprise, you post a picture of an attractive woman and people think your an attractive woman.  If I had been playing against you and all of a sudden you told me you were a guy, I would stop talking to you too.  Not because I was trying to get some, but because I'm not so sure why you were posting a picture like that if your a guy.  Are you trying to get some attention so you can act offended and attack people?  Well, obviously not otherwise you would have started a post . . . . . . . .  Ah shoot, I knew that I forgot something.

Oh, and to boots and joseph, your both immature idiots.  By all means, continue on with your childish bickering it provides me with amusement the likes of which MTV normally gives to the world.  This just proves the theory about the internet from penny arcade.  Normal Person + Anonimity + Audience = Total Moron (language cleaned up for the purposes of all who read this).  And no, I will not comment back to you guys after this.  You can both quote and post back on this forum or any other forum, I have enough common sense and maturity to not start sniping back and forth on an internet forum.

What I find ridiculous is that these guys are hitting on girls they will probably never meet, or talk too outside this website! That is just pathetic and sad,if these guys would bother to hit on girls face to face instead of on chess.com they might find better luck in nabbing a girlfriend. I guess it's easier on their ego if they get rejected online instead of up close and personal. C'mon guys... take a chance and put yourself out there in front of girls in your hometown, not here on chess.com! Besides it makes you look like a desperate loser when you hit on girls here, and most girls I know find desperate losers to be a major turn off. If your too shy to hit on women face to face, spare the rest of us who are here to play chess, and do it on a DATING WEBSITE.

It's not desperate, it's called initiative. You never know what can happen, "Hey beautiful" could lead to an "I do" later on. Plus the disable chat option is always availible for the men or women being hit on. I said men because women do the same thing, but from the look of your picture you wouldn't know anything about it.

Please!.... I get more play from women on one friday night than you have probably ever gotten in your life. At least I had the guts to post my own picture, unlike you who chose to hide what you look like behind some dumb South Park avatar. Grow a pair, and post a real pic of yourself. Besides I have been complimented on my looks a couple of times by female players on this site. Can you say the same South Park guy? No? then quit runnin your mouth about peoples looks.

i am deeply saddened that you actually look like that. don't get mad at me because i stated the obvious. and besides i don't need chicks from chess.com when i have your mom... yes south park guy went there.

hey hey its not that serious we can settle all disputes over a friendly game of chess

Ha! Ha! that idiotic mother comment was the best you could come up with?! I may be ugly, but at least I wasn't dropped on my head as an infant. Really dude.. when you revert to "mom" cut downs that just shows you where to stupid to defend yourself with words intelligently. Try a little harder next time. Oh and by the way don't get mad at me for cutting you down, YOU started this with your "ugly" comment. Next time learn to keep your big retarded mouth shut before you infect me with your stupidity.

p.s. My mom probably wouldn't go for a grown man who still watches cartoons. She likes her men a little more mentally grown up.

OUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think you'll find that the OP is the one who got offended. Maybe you should take a closer look at the subject of the thread before trying to be clever?

no im not offended. just wanted to no what others thought. i did get upset when a unicorn told me to use my real pic. and to those who dont no i am a guy the pic is of a deal or no deal model i think briefcase 21. ur avitar is what u like mine is what i like.

No person outside of the U.S. is going to know that your avatar shows some semi-celebrity, certainly I didn't.... there's a whole wide world out there.

YOUR RIGHT THERE IS A WHOLE WIDE WORLD OUT THERE. SO WHY DONT YOU GO OUT THERE AND JOIN THEM

Well, I'm not sure that is fair to say to someone, Skibaby. I am a 41 year old straight married woman and mother, so no vested interested but... it looks like a tight t-shirt hotty shot to me. The way I judge it is this: would a daughter of mine be allowed to post that photo on any website? No. From my perspective, it at least is provocative of "appreciative" commentary -- her chest is thrust forward and it is a bit of a come-hither angle -- though you're absolutely right that it is not soft-core or wet-teeshirt or anything like that and its not a pictorial open invitation to crudeness. But, as a mother, I'd not have allowed it.

UNDERSTANABLE, BUT SHE IS AN ADULT AND THE WOMEN I SEE OUTSIDE OF CHEST.COM ARE DRESSED A LOT MORE PROVACATIVE THAN SHE. SO IF THE GUYS ON HERE ACT LIKE THAT ONLINE MAYBE ITS SAFER FOR THE WOMEN IN THE REAL WORLD THAT THEY ARE HERE IN CYBERLAND

Okay, I'm done with this conversation now. It was, at points, very interesting and enlightenting, and a lot of people chimed in with some good points, whether I agreed or disagreed.... but the original poster obviously has some kind of game going or axe to grind or whatever. This is getting too bizarre. If you sincerely are bothered by how men react to your avatar -- change the avatar. But you seem to be very much interested in attention and argument.

I shall no longer give you either.

BUT IF YOU WERE TALKING AND FOUND OUT I WAS A GUY THEN STOPPED, WHAT WERE YOU REALLY AFTER? WOULD YOU EVEN PLAY IF I WERE A GUY? IM ALL FOR CONVERSATION, BUT TALK TO ME ABOUT THE CHESS GAME OR EVEN TRASH TALK ABOUT MY GAMEPLAY. I FIND IT AMUSING HOW PERVERTS TRY SO HARD TO DEFEND THEMSELVES

Some women on this site and others are guilty of the same transgressions.  I have seen it with my own eyes and had another woman from another site cause problems in my life.  You can change your picture and profile on here too, even request chess.com to change your screename if you feel it is necessary.  However, my issue esculated to me having to call the police three times, change my cell phone number, and I am moving, and not revealing my address to anyone who knows this person!
