Timeout vs. Abandonment

I’m likely posting this in the wrong area, but hopefully I can still get an answer. Sometimes a match will suddenly end declaring me winner by abandonment. Other times, the clock will continue to count down to zero, even though my opponent has not made a move in several minutes. I’m curious as to why this is.

I believe that if your opponent disconnects, his game will automatically resign in a certain time frame

For Live play- a game is timed-out when the clock expires and the player is online. The game becomes abandoned when they have disconnected or refuse to move. They lose when the clock expires or the auto-resign feature kicks in. Often the disconnect is intentional- quitting the game. Sometimes internet issue.

For Daily chess - timing out is the same as abandonment/quitting as there most always is ample time/opportunity to move. The internet can’t be blamed in most cases.

There's some kinda formula for this that I read in Martin_Stahl's link. Very confuzzling. This is why rapid kinda SUX, cuz if your opponent is salty about being in a losing position, they will sometimes just try to waste as much as your time as possible to try to get back at you.

The 55 second formula for rapid is not best. Most games are 10/0. A 55 second auto-abort at the beginning and the excessive time allowed to be wasted by the formula is far, far too long for 10 minute Rapid.

Oliver is correct- salty players are taking advantage of the formula being applied to the very shortest Rapid time control.
Blitz is 15 seconds

Rapid jumps way up to 55 secs when there is in fact little over all time difference between 5/2 and 10/0
