I understand.  And I forgive you.  But why do you feel the need to lash out?  You seem very hurt.  Relax, guy.

So, word of mouth is reliable when it comes outside from the internet, but not when it comes from the internet, for some reason. Glad we settled that.

Shivsky

Though in some cases, google mocks you as well.

if only he could see

If you want to find something out, e.g. how many grams in 1 pound, google it. If you want to learn how do something: play the french defense, change a headlight, make a good omelette, YOUTUBE.COM.

In any case, one can think of google like asking your "friend".  This friend has a vast amount of information.  However, this friend is also kind of a dimwit.  Is he autistic?  He seems to recommend Wikipedia for everything I ask him.  I also heard this "friend" keeps tabs on what I ask him and reports that to some faraway place.  I wonder what they do with that information.

So I'd rather just ask other people.  The people I ask may in turn ask the wierd autistic spy guy with all the information, but that's their business.

If we read other people's comments I can agree that talking to people about a topic = talking to people on forum = talking to people through googling answers.

In terms of the quantity of information available I would rate:
googling>forum>speaking to people

In terms of quality of information I would say that it varies widely between the three.

Spying is a whole different topic...but it doesn't effect just things you google. I hope you know that every thing you post in a forum is recorded as well.

The internet revolutionized the world through communication. And communication enhances the pool of knowledge available to anybody in search of it. It's as simple as that. Google is more broad and has a larger knowledgebase on subjects. The quality of information may be equivalent to, better than, or occasionally worse than what you might find by speaking to someone or browsing a forum, but because of the vastness of what is available through googling and through wikipedia, it becomes an extremely valuable source. I don't see how someone can dispute that.

But don't get me wrong, each resource has its brightpoints and that depends on the topic you are researching. Sometimes it is better to speak with a person or go on a forum. Which is one reason I don't mind browsing/asking questions in forums.

Actually, even if I wanted to know how many grammes are in one pound, I'd ask someone in a forum.  I wouldn't rely on google.

Ubik42

Ask me how many grams are in a pound, then. Go ahead.

johnmusacha

Well I already know how many grammes are in an ounce, I do live in Miami after all.

Ubik42

Ok. But do you know how many are in 12.85 pounds?

Here is a hint: its 5828.7g

I really don't like youtube for these type of things, videos are to slow at conveying information.  Why should I sit through a video that has someone talking at around 100 words per minute when I can read the information three times faster?

Sorry, but Ubik is my go-to source for Imperial to Metric weight conversions now.  No offense.

Sossitch

I find it much easier to learn by watching someone actually do it than try to read something in a technical manual. a picture is worth a thousand words, what's a video worth?
