I listen GM after GM saying that fisher random variant is stronger day after day and in a future not to distant, it will be the standart variation. It is not my personal feeling, at least at this moment. Not OTB, not in chess.com or other online websites. There is any place in chess.com where i can check the total number of games by variant, for example, in last month?

I don't think I have seen that published.

It would be nice to see. I would guess that it is still 99:1 for classic chess over variants in terms of popularity. Maybe this month there was a big increase in Chess960 popularity.

My guess is, even with the 960 FIDE tournament, probably not even 99:1. I think it is not even 99,5:0,5. But i might be wrong, it would nice to check it... At least in Portugal, for what i know, there isn't 960 OTB tournaments. Maybe some local smaller ones, but even so...

If you allow me, I would like to put some more spice on this subject. The story of ending classic chess is the same as ending cinema when home video came along, then cable TV, and then streaming...

yes, but even there we see the declining trend. in chess i see people playing 960 as a coffee break between real chess... i don't see a declining trend in regular chess compared with a clear climbing trend from 960. don't mean i don't like it or don't believe it can be the future, but i am not seeing that anywhere...

Fisher random, is still chess, but more challenging since one cannot be "authistic", with pic-memory or study to perfection, one actually have to know chess and think strategicly/ coordinated to get the game closed.. I see it as a natural part of developement that FR will take over, at least in the big league, I guess.. So in minor league and developement of players, maybe ordinary chess will be standard, while learning..

and, in your opinion, between learning and top chess. most of us is or was club players, at least at some point. do you think in, let say, 10 years, most games will be 960? and local or national official tournaments? do you think 960 will take over regular chess?

I think, since the World Championsip, where Wesley So beat Magnus Carlsen, it will be a feed to the interest, and that several of the established players will be playing an perfecting skills to join in the FR.. Did not mean to offend anyone, I still think ordinary will be main source of learning and developing, but now when they are planning to obtain championship in FR every second years, it may draw a lot more into the game.. I hope there will be a broader specter of players, at least, because there are too little interest for it right now. And I can understand that, because it took me many games of FR before I managed to enjoy it too.. It twists the mind a little different than ordinary.. 🙂
