Huh?
Tournament to celebrate Mangalyaan in Mars Orbit

Are you nuts? The west hands out alms to their friend Pakistan. And everyone knows where that money goes - look at their east and west borders!!
As for India, the Brit PM came to India begging for a helicopter deal!
Unless you are confusing with the Kohinoor that the English looted and put in their queen's crown. Yes that, India is demanding to be returned to it's rightful owner.
This orbiter has all Indian made components, also India may need some foreign help sometimes, but remember that many prominent scientists in NASA are Indians too.India also launches satellites for other countries using its own PSLV rockets, other countries come willingly because they know that PSLV rockets are cheap and reliable too..India's maiden moon mission Chandrayaan was also launched using PSLV...

Like you, even within India there are less enlightened people who question India's space program. India has it's own reasons for having a space program. I can educate you on that separately if you are willing. Let's first stick to your question: "Why do they need money from the UK". Please give one example where India asked UK for money.

I too can write a sentence "560 million pounds given to UK from India in 2013". That doesn't cut any ice.

OK, I get it. Are you referring to the aid that India does not want but the UK is begging India to accept as per The Telegraph (the Peanuts news).

Well India had not asked for it. In fact India does not want it. Read this and many other articles about it. It is well documented.

So why exactly is the UK giving aid to India if India doesn't want it? I did not find the article particularly elucidating with respect to that question.

@kaynight: politicians, unfortunately, are all the same all over the world. Just look in your backyard. The recent scandal about your MPs claiming false expenses is just one of them.
About being condescending, yes I am guilty of that. But who started it? Your initial comment was set in an extremely offensive and condescending tone. That definitely infuriated me. If you really wished to have a discussion on why India needs space program you could have shown your disagreement in a more civilized manner. But you chose to come out as Mr. know-all who knows India's needs better than India and Indian policy makers, using words like 'nonsense' & 'handouts' in order to demean India.
However, the fact remains if you are truly interested in "why India's space program', you need to be educated about it. There is no other word for that. Whether you self-educate or request for help, is your choice.
@macer75: The answer to your question partially lies in the fact that India gives more aid than it receives (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2068930/How-India-squanders-British-aid--1-4bn-country-space-programme.html).
Why would I give money to other people? There can be three reasons: (a) I stole (perhaps legally) a fortune from them and my guilty conscience is somewhat pacified by returning a part of it. (b) The other party is really in need and I wish to help. (c) I wish to extract even bigger benefits indirectly than what I give directly.
In a nutshell, historically all these three were UK's reasons to provide aid to India. In case of India I feel it is (c) - create goodwill for better trade. However now it is clear for almost a couple of decades that (b) above is no more a valid reason for UK to transfer money to India. With economic crisis at home and growing outrage within for the money being sent to India, this aid will be over by 2015 as per news clippings.
vms: You are on the wrong site if you do not want to witness a full and frank exchange of opinions.
exhange of opinions(primarily chess) not exchange of heated words. i m on the correct site

To be fair to kaynight, I feel his heart is at the right place, but his style rubs me the wrong way.
If he had put his views like, "India has put a probe in Mars orbit on their first attempt. This implies they have enough money and tecnological skills to solve most of their problems. Why is it then so many Indians go to bed hungry?", I would be with him. It's a sore point for me too.
But rubbishing the space program, I find that totally unacceptable. And for proving his point, to insinuate that India is asking UK to help financially is loathsome.
kaynight, for a moment think of this part of world with ONLY China, North Korea, Pakistan, Iran having proven rocket technology with nuclear capabilities. How do you like it? Which country or countries do you think is/are doing the balancing act? India comes first to mind, doesn't it? And then Japan, South Korea.
What does placing Mangalyaan in Mars orbit mean?
It means India has mastered the technology of (a) Rocket science and (b) navigating a piece of metal (as you put it) accurately after being launced from a rocket.
At least I find that a bit reassuring. Don't know about you.
If I can put this 2+2 together, the experts in defense would have done so 5 years back. This piece of information is not lost on anyone. It works as a great deterrent for peace keeping in the region and hence the world.
This is just one aspect of it. The other, much more noble gain from such projects is the knowledge mankind gains. And don't forget the thrill of adventure and meeting a challenge. All these are important for human race to progress.
Otherwise even Olympics can also be seen as a blot on the face of mankind, as long as even one child goes hungry.
kaynight the population of the whole of UK is ONLY 64 million,India's is 1252 million. The entire UK speaks only English, but India has around 25 main languages as recognised by the constitution and around 1000 minor dialects.India has a desert in the west, the worlds highest mountains in the north ,tropical forests in the east and a densely populated peninsula in the south, while UK is more or less the same everywhere. So I feel that if you are capable of understanding simple things, you must also understand that if your politicians from UK are assigned the task of governing India, even 1000 years will not be enough to feed all the people everyday....The Government is doing an excellent job,India is still a fast developing country,so being so successful in a space programme is an extraordinary achievement,we have the best brains in the world, the only problem was that they were not being completely utilised before, but now they are,so all the problmes you mentioned will disappear in 20-25 years max..
India is the first country who got it right the first time.
You conveniently fail to mention that this project was done years after the first of its kind, thus giving the scientists involved in it the chance to learn from others' errors.
India did not "invent" chess; some Indian(s) did, at most, and modern chess owes a number of its rules to non-Indians who came into contact with the game's predecessors.
The American education system fails yet again.

"You conveniently fail to mention that this project was done years after the first of its kind, thus giving the scientists involved in it the chance to learn from others' errors."
Learning from predecessors and applying your own mind...that's what science and technology is all about. It does not mean credit should not be given to latest landmark and people who achieve it.
