Unrated Clowns
I played 3 games yesterday. In two of them, my opponent just stopped moving. In one game, he made only one move and abandoned. In the other, he made about 14 moves in 15 minutes and abandoned. At least in that second game I was up 8 points or so, so it was more like he resigned, but I had to wait 45 minutes to be sure.
And so we come to the question of people who are mentally defective ( no shortage of them on the internet ). Yes the clowns are still here, one ran off yesterday, and one this morning too. So what type of moron would run away from a unrated game ? Well do not buy a used car from them or co-sign a loan for them lol.
If I added up all the ratings points I've gotten for nothing....just for opponents bailing out and giving me an unearned win, I wouldn't be surprised if it was 100 points or more. So, no wonder I'm on such a losing streak. I got 100 points higher than I should have and now the system is imposing its painful justice to bring me back to where I belong .
When someone quits the game and you get 8 points and a win.... don't rejoice. You'll pay later. The only way to get to the next level is to earn it.
Yes it is your opponents fault that you are stuck at 1000.
No....it's their fault that I got 100 points higher than I deserved because they gave me unearned points. If I'm "stuck" at 1000, it's because I'm a 1000 level player. I was at 1100, but clearly I'm not an 1100 level player.
PS. I didn't say I was "stuck" at 1000. I may be passing through on the way to 900.

Why do you say that? I'm not sure what I'm saying that you're having a problem with. I got to 1100 because of unearned points....people making 3 or 4 moves and then letting time run out. That happened many times and I gained at least 100 points. So I'm claiming that I was rated higher than my ability justified. You disagree?

You don't get 100 rating points because you got lucky... you get 100 rating points because you (mostly) outperformed the majority of your opponents on any given day. Sometimes you have better days than others...

In general, I strongly agree with you. But it so happened that I had many opponents who just quit. The other day, a guy made one move and abandoned. I got a win for that and gained 8 points for nothing. I'm claiming that I have at least 100 rating points that I did NOT earn. You disagree?
I'm further claiming that my current losing streak is partly because my rating got higher than my ability due to the unearned points.
And I certainly don't see an opponent abandoning as "getting lucky". Unearned points are no blessing.

Well yes... but it won't make you overrated at our level... surely you have games you abandoned yourself (Whether on purpose or accident) that would also balance that? As well as games were you resigned early because you weren't feeling it that day
Plus, the difference between 1000 and 1100 is not that large, compared to higher levels where 100 points becomes a lot

That could very well be. To me, it seems there is a big difference between 1000 and 1100, but I'm a novice, so that's just a rough opinion, and could be way off. But, if you can believe me, in my 400 games or so, I have never abandoned. I have resigned when I felt it was unwindable, but never once because I just didn't feel like going on. It hurts me to resign, so I don't take it casually, but I also have a sense of when "it's time". So the balance of unearned points is, in fact, in my "favor" by at least 100 points. Maybe my losing streak has nothing to do with that, but back to your original comment, I believe my rating in general, now 999, is a reflection of my ability relative to the player pool I'm in, and in general is earned by playing and winning. I obviously got to thinking about these unearned points, and you see where it led me.
