Chess Ratings - How They Work‎

How do ratings work on Chess.com?

Avatar of Bramblyspam

These days, I play exclusively in daily chess tournaments with a minimum rating of 2200. That's the level of competition I like to play against. My latest tournament had multiple 2200+ rated players whose true skill level had to be under 1000, they were hanging pieces left and right. It appears they started with a rating of 2000, played a few games against equally unskilled friends (also rated 2000), and... well, you know the rest.

Yes, these people's ratings will inevitably tumble in short order. But the influx of these types of players is certain to cause significant rating inflation. We're also likely to see people closing their accounts and starting anew, just to get their rating up. That's not a good development.

There's nothing wrong with starting at 1200. That's where I started when I joined this site. If they're strong players, their ratings will rapidly rise to reflect their true strength.

Agree. Maybe something like "1000 or 1200 max Initial rating for not FIDE/USCF rated New members" is the way to go?

Well i know zero about how it works at USCF... What i know is: go touch at least 100 Rated games here and u will c the magic wink.png

So I'm provisional for how long?

Not 100 games. 20?

I've been told that you can gain zero for winning a game here but I don't know the maximum you're risking, the maximum you can gain, or if Chess.com uses a provisional system.

That webpage is uninformative.

Ok, I see that the system is provisional in the sense that your RATING DEVIATION gradually decreases over time.

So Chess.com considers 100 games a lot more accurate than 10 games.

In USCF you escape the provisional rating after 20 games.

It is quite simple here: once u r playing it is like:

W+8 D-1 L-9 or
W+11 D+2 L-8 or so...
Depends on opponents's rating.

...even less, sometimes.

...but! i have it set to +/-100. If you play much wider stuff, chess gods with u ! wink.png

Just a few months ago I had beginning unrated players in my school chess club Who Had joined chess.com and wanted to join our U1200 match against another team. Chess.com blocked them from joining the match as 400, 800 , or 1200 players saying they did not have enough activity. So we had to scramble and have them play each other as individuals, and then when they had a few games on record, chess.com would finally let them join a team match with an 800 rating. Now chess.com lets anybody join a team match as a 2000. Beginners who have no concept of their true ability level and the rating system are signing up as experts, playing other beginners with 2000 ratings, and becoming 2200 masters overnight. And in many cases they are not aware of what these rating numbers mean. Many thousands of us have spent years on chess.com, sacrificing our time and energy in a noble struggle to reach 2000. Now chess.com hands out 2000 ratings like doggy treats at petsmart. This cheapens and makes a mockery of the rating system and the respect and honor that players with a 2000+ rating truly deserve.

New members of chess.com used to be required to have some activity before they could get a daily rating, and then that rating was usually 1200, 800, or 400. Now brand new unrated players are joining chess.com within the last few weeks with zero speed chess games or any activity of any kind, and they are getting 2000 ratings for individual matches with a single opponent AND for joining team matches!!! For many it took a life time of struggle to earn a 2000 rating, and now chess.com is handing them out like cookies at grandma’s house. What is going on?

if you were good at the game would you want to play like seven pointless games just to get to a 2000 rating? Besides, if the new players aren't good, they won't stay 2000 for long.

We all started out with low 1200 or 1400 Ratings. Most players in the world who are “good at the game“ have already joined chess.com and earned an accurate rating. This new any beginner can have a 2000 rating and become an expert or master overnight rule  helps nobody and makes the whole rating system an inaccurate fraud. If ratings are fake, bogus, and meaningless, the whole system collapses.

If I ever get matched against a 2000 exactly, I reckon that, these days. I am in with a chance.
