I never even have chat on. I just have chat set to no one. It's much easier that way. .

the reason i still have mine on is sometimes you can have really cool conversations with people. plus the rude people are still entertaining lol

Me too. I never used it, but then one day this clot started jibbering away abusively during a game. Turned it off. Leave it turned off. There sure are some pathetic folk out there. meh.png

Yes, but not always, and it's better to just save yourself from pointless arguing.

Pegusu

I’ve had a fair amount of men make unbelievably inappropriate remarks to me on more than a few occasions.  I never expected that on chess.com.  The trolling is vile and needs to stop ASAP!

Habanababananero

I have reported an opponent a couple times for verbal abuse.

I do that, because the other option, for me, would be to give them their own medicine and that I will not do, because then I would risk getting banned myself.

Marcyful

I once had a blitz match where I pinned the opponent's king to the queen and he said one of the most disturbing things I've ever read, "Your child is mine". I don't have a child... I am a child.

Marcyful

Luckily, chess.com responded to my report but I never checked if that sicko is off the site for good.

I love when they get pissy and start cursing at me in the chat it actually makes my day... i mean how pathetic is your life that in order to make yourself feel better over a loss against someone of similar rating in chess you have to start swearing at your opponent? Just ignore it, chill and have a good laugh... ffs chess is a sport of the mind, how strong and resilient is one's mind if they're getting offended/bothered by randoms on the internet???

Personally i think it would be odd to not be bothered by someone insulting you. It’s not a common place occurrence in my experience. It actually seems entirely possible to live a full life by avoiding places where people are regularly jerks to each other. I understand the idea that people should be able to except the fact that life has a holes in it and everyone has to deal with them but I think the amount of a holes on chess.com is equivalent to what you might find in a prison, and I think it would make sense to complain about the toxic culture in a prison.

Haven't been to prison, but I doubt chess.com, as sucky as it is, is equivalent to what one might find in a prison lol... but it's not a matter of avoiding places with jerks... jerks are everywhere, from gas stations to libraries, gyms to restaurants, car shops to churches... can't be avoided, but I just don't get fazed by it... why would I be bothered by it? Dude's first response to losing in online blitz is to talk about my mom? If that is the level of people that can offend me tbh it says more about me than them

Hey guys,

The goal of the thread is twofold, I really want you guys perception to make sure my own is not skewed and I want to make sure the point is driven across to chess.com because I assume community managers and/or admins do read the forums sometimes

Let me preface by saying I have only been playing for about 1.5 years, so basically this makes me part of the 'boom' of chess which is great because it made so many people including me learn this extremely fun and rewarding game.
Back then the number of times I had the opportunity to report people for stalling or verbal abuse was probably around 1/50 or even less than that.

It is getting progressively worst and worst, to the point where in the last couple of weeks I am reaching a point where there is a reportable offense literally 15% or 1/7 times. I get emails from you guys every couple of days but literally no one has been banned and I'm 100% sure people who verbally abuse do not stop after warnings.

The toxicity is palpable. I read more toxicity in-game here than in most video games, which is pretty freaking insane when you think about it.

I know your business model is predicated toward active memberships in some capacity (I'm happy to give you guys money I love your site), but can you please be more strict in this regard?

For the other players, am I the only one who feels this way? lol (My rating hovers around 1100-1300)

Thank you for reading, have happy holidays!

I can’t count how many people have messaged me racist or homophobic insults. And the worst are people who just message you some stupid insult telling you to commit suicide. It’s not like people deal with anxiety and depression. It’s not like people take their own lives for those reasons. And then I come on here and see that…. And I report it, alongside the context that people deal with this ****. And those trolls are still here, likely treating others this way.

And people seriously wonder why others don’t like chess.com.

PineappleMcPineapple

There are some polite people on chess.com, for example, I have used google translate to communicate with people whos language I don't know, and they have been very polite most of the time, even though google translate is a piece of ****

Good to know. I personally never felt inclined to start convos with random opponents. I just let them do the starting.

this is the one thing that does really suck. harmless insults are one thing but sexism, racism, and homophobia are another. i think the best thing to do with those kinds of things is brush it off and report and block.

Pegusu

I am so glad I opened up a dialogue.  True, we can and do brush these these things off but when Marcyful (comment #28) reported what someone had said to her, it made my blood boil.  I don’t want to disable the chat button as I have met some really nice and kind people but I should not have to brush things off, and Marcyful (a child) DEFINITELY should not have to be exposed to this smut.  Let’s all play chess and let’s all just embrace the chess nerds in all of us!

Woollensock2
I find reporting someone for abuse, is just a waste of time. I blocked a member and in return he started a campaign of harassment against me, calling me all sorts of vile things. I reported him of course, but to no avail the harassment continued .
Gregg-Turkington

Not only is it too lenient, it’s slow to respond. Take this for example. I reported [edited] for having inappropriate conversation with children over ten days ago. But the creep is still here pretending like everything is ok.

Gregg-Turkington
You’d figure that they’d have a separate way of reporting something that serious so that the report doesn’t get mingled in with issues of lesser importance.
