Why not do away with them and instead put objective negative and positive comments in their place? It doesn't enhance the playing experience to have a comic strip Japanese girl telling me she likes playing chess with me.
Prior to 2007 (maybe 2005) is was a site selling Chess Mentor lessons software. Since then it's a Chess site geared towards to regular Chess players through titles ones (mostly in the events front for the latter). It's been 13+ the whole time.
There are a lot of different bots and what they say depends on their personality or the actual person their based on for those that based on an actual person.
