For the "Max # of Games" setting, is that the max number of welcome games, or the max number of total online games?

Thanks, Alan

Buddy, I support you I have asked the same question. Hope we get an answer from Erick, he might be having his lunch now.

Apparently it's the number of welcome games.  I was thinking it was the total number of online games -- since I already had 7 or 8 going, I figured 10 would give me 2 or 3 welcome games.  Now I have 10 welcome games to play in addition to my other games.  Oops -- oh well, I need to play more games anyway.  Laughing

On a related note, I had a new player make some rude comments in the chat -- I don't think he understands what turn-based chess is yet since he thought I wasn't playing fast enough (probably due to having 10 new games start!).  I suggested he try the live chess section if he wants to play live.

Should be fun though...

I used to greet, but Im too busy now, and dont have time to explain stuff. If we would be rewarded in some way or other (maybe most active greeter of the month awards or that stuff.

max games??? is that as many games played or at one time

Why bother? Why waste one's time playing games that usually won't finish and no one will be grateful for if they do? And no ratings points gained or lost.

If the new player is interested they will stay regardless, if they are timewasters, or looking for a different system, they will not.

My greeter was uncommunicative, not friendly and answered my questions briefly, or not at all.I am still here.

Many other members who had no greeter are still here.Thousands of people who had a greeter left immediately, especially if my inforamtion is correct, if  the greeter was American.Do the maths. (or math, if you must.)

Also, it is clear that the greeter system doesn't actually work, you either get nobody, or are inundated with dozens of newbys.

Pah! Humans!

I've played over 150 greeter games, is there any way to "entice" others to become greeters by offering points for each finished game?

....

It's true that most greeter games don't get past the first move, but I just finished a greeter game where both the game and conversation were a great deal of fun, and that makes all the rest of the aborted games worth it.  I got a great game, another person on my friends list, and chess.com got a new premium member.  I'll take a hundred unfinished games for every one that has that kind of outcome.

Instead of putting out a general call for greeters, shouldn't there maybe be a screening process to find people who won't get frustrated and be the best possible choice for growing membership.

To be honest, I would have never wanted to play with a greeter when I came to this site. I had specific friends I wanted to challenge. But I'm sure it's a weird experience to just play against a random person who thinks he or she is just being friendly and trying to promote the site. It'd be cool to perhaps play with a staff member or some other more official site-related person. The idea of random greeters sounds awkward, just like at church.

Correct they just add to the unrated stats, and list it in the queue!

I agree with broc colihero new chess.com members should be given a choice of "live Chess" or turn-base chess games. I had a 27 year old player saying, go,go, go, go, in first remark to me, on first move no Hello, Hi, Aloha I had to explain to him that "turn-base" chess didn't work that way! And that each player has X number of days to move. I also said many players do move faster then scheduled per setting.

I recommend if he wanted to play a faster pace to try "live Chess", but that he should review the rules and learn how pieces move.etc. he ended losing his Queen as he still did not understand how a bishop moved! Cool

So they should be do you know how the pieces move and rules of chess, if not they should be directed to the section so they know at least there is a place in Chess.com to review this info as they have time. Also should want they want to play I recommend "live Chess" next and then turn-base chess, as the majority of young chess players want fast action and easily get bored with "slow turn-base chess, and thus we end up with turn-base players with lots of wins with less then 1 or 2 moves!

I realize "Live Chess" is still in beta mode, but that's what most chess players are accustom to if you go to any chess club, blitz chess, bughouse, and maybe a one or two slow games and a lesson game here and there!

I say 1 or 2 out 15 new players starting a "turn-base game will continue playing turn-base game, this from my experience not just here, but redhotpawn, chess.ac, letsplaychess.com, and few other places.

I'm not saying its not a good idea it is but New Players need to be given more choices maybe a computer game first that way when don't have to say go, go, go, and the computer program here can be program to tell the new player go, go, go, go, and see how they like that!

I deal with lots of new players at my OTB  clubs and classes and will sit them down and explain how clock works in chess, I also tell them its not good sportsmanship to tell your opponent to hurry and move. And then explain the 3 ways to win at chess and if we have time the 5 ways to draw, including perpetual chess draws, etc. Normally after 10 minutes they just want to start playing and will try to pair with another player with know of the rules of chess s that they continue learning! As this is what Chess.com is intending to do!

So lets go,go,go, withe the programming and ix so new players can easily decide if they want a fast or slow or learning game, or just want to know where they can find the rules of chess! hmm, sending new players to the Learn section first and requiring they review these rules first would be helpful to all of us!

Mahalo and see you at "turn-base chess" soon!

yAh!!! I can scare away... I mean "greet" new players now;) (evil lol)

I've got lots of greeter games, and thats fine.....but just to vent, it gets a bit annoying when they make a move, and 1 minute later there's a 'HURRRRRRYYYY', or 'MOVE' message popping up in the chat screen. Makes me less inclined to want to help them, although I usually direct them to the live chess area for rapid games.

I would like to become a greeter, but I'm not sure how...

Where could I locate this "Be a Greeter Box?"   :D

Avatar of CaiusF

I'm one also.

Avatar of grover-dill

I'm now a greeter with a 100 game max.  Just waiting for some games now

Avatar of chess337

I signed up as a greeter, only two games at a time though, and I immediately had games to play.  So far it's been fun.

Avatar of golem3

I take on about 15-20 at a time. I find that 80-90% of the first time players just die out due to time, so you're actually only playing 10% of the games at best you request on your account.

On another note, it doesn't seem to be working at the moment! I have only 3 pending games for some reason.

Avatar of tfray94

Is there a minimum requirement to be a greeter? I want to be one but I don't see the option.

Avatar of ChessGod

I was a greeter for a while, but people I played usually never got past the 4th move before never visiting the site again.  That and the overwhelming amount of games I started with people, it was a little annoying, so I stopped >.<

Yes, erik.  I will help make you money without compensation.
