what do clubs even do

They talk about everything except chess. They are mainly for socializing. The last club I was in spent more time talking about "woke," religion and US politics than chess.

I foolishly believed that joining a club would bring me into contact with a lot of people who, like me, love this beautiful, beautiful game. But when people in the last club I was in kept veering off into non-chess subjects I realized that real chess lovers are hard to find. When they started making jokes about the "n-word" I realized that clubs are not for me.

Clubs on chess.com can be wonderful I had to cut back on my clubs years ago because it was taking so much time away from my chess, but it was certainly fun while it lasted and created an even greater sense of community.
One just has to find clubs which resonate with them. Different clubs have different rules and values. Just because one or two clubs didn't work out for you, this doesn't mean all clubs won't work out for you.
Here are some chess.com clubs I am a member of which are friendly environments:

https://www.chess.com/club/chess-com-community
https://www.chess.com/club/kesetokaiba-chess-coliseum
Okay, the last club was one I created to keep my audience updated on my YouTube videos but it is still a friendly group
What things would you value in a group? Either use the chess.com club search,
https://www.chess.com/clubs or I could recommend a club I think might fit that description.

Daily matches, vote chess, and tournaments. Those are the only useful parts of clubs. I never really enjoyed the chatting parts of clubs other than talking about chess
This is my club for vote chess: https://www.chess.com/club/dune so I know it is a friendly group of chess players. I don't want to feel like I'm advertising clubs here, but these are some places I think are worth checking out.

Fair point @ehm42 Some clubs are 'too active' for me. You can limit your club notifications in the club settings, but sometimes I also prefer to just be selective about which clubs I join.

I turned off notifs in like 50 clubs lol I mean, It’s caused me to forget about some of them, but eh
Same and then I just left the clubs I wasn't active enough in. There were also some amazing clubs which were active and an amazing group, but then something happened and the group fell apart and went super inactive. This has happened for a few groups I was in too.
