In the context of chess it became a buzzword during the first Pogchamps when Finegold pointed out (accurately) that XqC was a talentless piece of garbage (comments which certainly aged well, reaction streamers steal content while producing nothing of value). White knights got some milage out of pretending old GMs like Finegold were trying to prevent new young players from enjoying chess or gaining legitimacy, but after a few months people seemed bored of the idea and you didn't hear much about it.

Since then beginners have sometimes use accusations of gatekeeping as a cudgel whenever it's pointed out they don't know what they're talking about. This is in spite of the fact that the largest chess organizations cater primarily to beginners.

XqC is obviously not terribly talented at chess, but while Finegold has done lots of good; his comments were in bad taste. It's not really gatekeeping but it is elitist.

Some people enjoy certain kinds of jokes and excited expressions alongside their chess. Yes, it may not be to your personal taste, but so what? Let people enjoy what they want to enjoy.

You have no obligation to ever watch XqC or Pogchamps.

It's basically an argument used by chess entertainment streamers (usually not very strong players) against people (usually strong masters) who take chess seriously and focus on topics like improvement, chess history etc. rather than on performing 30s dances on TikTok with a chess board to "popularize the game".

I was going to add most people who use it don't know what it means... but glad this janko person is making that point for me... a bot conspiracy to depress ratings is not gatekeeping, lol.

.

It's fairly easy to discern the logically correct meaning. It refers to self-appointed marshals of truth and justice, who try to keep content in conformity with what they want to see.

It can therefore be not a conspiracy to depress ratings but definitely a conspiracy to depress the human intellect in order to make its output more in conformity with what they are able to understand.

We have some here.

Noam Chomsky is a gatekeeper. James Corbett made a video on him. He presumes to be an outsider critiquing the system. Evidence shows he won't critique the Federal Reserve or 9/11 for example.

Many doctors coming out now and admitting the jab was harmful might be “gatekeepers”; trying to steer the narrative down a path that can be controlled. E.g. that it was all because of “negligence” and “lack of regulation” rather than wilful life shortening….

Apologies to all you normies for my post…(NOT)

huh? it seems like his example shows the real meaning of the word "gatekeeper" (or am I wrong?).

And if not, it seems like a harmless joke

It's an example of an insane conspiracy theory followed by another insane conspiracy theory. And the proof behind it is a comedy late night show that was either made by Stephen Colbert or James Corden?

Yeah, maybe it's a joke.

Wait if gatekeeping is an argument then why is it called gatekeeping?

Ghostbusters is all I can think about. " Are you the gatekeeper?" He says to the horse.

A gatekeeper attempts to keep others out of whatever is being argued about if the gatekeeper feels the person isn't qualified to take part in that thing.; i.e. manning the gates to keep people out.
