What is the starting grade for new members?

Hi I was just wondering what the starting grade is so I can measure my progress

Also how exactly does the grading system work? is it a 35 game average?

1200 (though it shown as unrated until 5 games have been played).

The rating is updated after every game using a standard formula - see how-do-ratings-work and chess-ratings---how-they-work.
