What would it take to finally push you over the edge?

The owner(s) of this site is very clever, and not just in a chess way...

I bet most of your subscriptions are to be renewed automatically, and thus once every year (or monthly)  they'll deduct your subscription fee from your bank account, regardless of whether you are active of not, and keeping in mind that 1.) you'll not notice the deduction or 2.) you'll notice the deduction but do not respond within the contractual 7 days to "recall" the deduction or 3.) notice the deduction but never does anything to stop the deduction, its a winning formula for some serious "royalty" like income to be generated.... And best of all; you agreed to this practise when you subscribed!!!....

These guys are clever... bear in mind the tearful articles/posts about the heartache and pain to start the site, and you have the winning recipe to (on the long term) get people to pay for something they use very little...

(I'll not be surprised if this post/thread disappears mysteriously)

 Not necessarily true.  I use Chess.com a WHOLE LOT rather than "very little."  In fact, I'm not even supposed to be here right now.  I have things I NEED to do, and Chess.com keeps distracting me.

I wouldn't ridicule people if I were born in/live in Ireland...

My goal is not to become a chess champion.  My goal is to enjoy myself.  If I go out to the movies, or a concert, or a hockey game, or whatever, I will be spending money on entertainment.  That's all this site is: entertainment.  And for less than the cost of two concert tickets (not including gas, parking, drinks, t-shirt, etc.) I've got a year's worth of entertainment here.  Sure I CAN play here for free, but I get a LOT more enjoyment out of this site (cuz of all the perks) for just a little extra money (and I got a cool Chess.com T-shirt too ).

My point being; do you realize that they'll keep deducting your subscription fees long after you are not involved with the site, anymore?

Untill you make a effort to stop the deductions taking place?

PS this business model in not new...

Yeah, subscriptions are auto-renewed just like gym memberships, netflix, and all other subscriptions that people use. And yeah, it says that in 5 different places when you subscribe. And you can easily unsubscribe and keep your membership through the paid time. Nothing clever about that.

I made up all the hard work stuff. I just snapped my fingers and POOF this site appeared! So easy!

You would not kill this site like that. The pure genius behind it will be written about for years to come. So at best consider my posts envious....

ok ;) but let me say this: if i were thoughtlfully planning a get-rich-quick scheme it would hardly be a chess website. trust me - living in Silcon Valley and being a Stanford MBA, there are plenty of more lucrative options around... i just happen to love the game and wanted to see if we could build something amazing for chess players (including ourselves). nobody is subscribing unless they are deriving sufficient value.

I will upgrade to platinum when I can afford to because this is a really good site and I want to use the extra features
