What's The Story Behind Lichess.org

Start from here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lichess

"Lichess was founded in 2010 by French programmer Thibault Duplessis. The software running Lichess and the design are mostly open source under the AGPL license and other free and non-free licenses. The name Lichess is a 'combination of live/light/libre and chess'."
-Wikipedia

Even though it's not-for-profit, many of its employees are paid, as well as its founder, Thibault Duplessis, who receives a salary of $60,000 a year... much less, however than what he would receive if it were a normal business.
They depend entirely on donations for all operating costs and provide the same services regardless of whether or not the user is a contributor.

There's no doubt that Duplessis is passionate about chess, but I think the idea that this is in contrast to those who founded and run chess.com, and accusing them of "only caring about money" is an example of being cynical to the point of absurdity.

Lichess formed when the rook in chesscom was removed from the game. He felt betrayed so he went on to create his own empire, "Lichess.org"
