I think identifying Switzerland got more difficult for Americans raised in the Internet age.  Let's see, Switzerland-- domain might be .sw , right?  Swaiziland?  Really?  Then what's Sweden?  Ah, .se .  OK, understandable.  Well, since Switzerland is SUI in the Olympics, they must be .su .  The Soviet Union is .su?  It doesn't even exist anymore!  OK, I give up.  What's Switzerland? .ch ????  I thought that was China . . . Cool

i for one appreciate this simple service.  when i get confused by the "swas", i just look up your profile.

it is rather embarassing, but i do mix them up.  i know the difference, but when i speak and start the "swa" there is no telling which will come out.  or when a minor news story comes out of one of them and i try to talk about it later it is often "in sweden or switzwerland...".

Do you find the raesoning in my example to be flawed? Do you doubt that these things go on in Iran or China?

i do, actually.  i think this is an example of fear leading people to demonize certain groups.  i also think that if the fear of being on chess.com was happening, that this would not be a reason for not divulging the city.

stalkers may grant you.

I've never understood how so many people can confuse Iowa with Ohio.  Sure, it's related to both names having 4 letters and lots of vowels, but they don't sound at all the same.  Even if someone doesn't know anything about the two states and can't point to them on a map I'd think they should be difficult to get confused.

i don't suffer from that one.  and i can point to them on a map.  iowa is the one in the middle with "iowa"...

And then there are those that get Idaho mixed up with Iowa. And how about those that think saguaros grow all over the western part of the U. S.  And then there are those that think all chess players are weird.

All of the above are true, which goes to demonstrate that no one knows everything and everybody is confused about something.

I've never noticed this, myself.  I have noticed, though, that lots of people call asphalt ashphalt.

Silly people.  Everyone knows saguaros are made in Cuba by guys rolling up tobacco leaves.

Wrong! I lived in Tucson for a while and I never knew that.  I learn so much on these forums.

you forgot the part about anyone that is confused about something you know is stupid and anything you are confused about is just a simple mix up that anyone can make.  (please note this is the global "you", not the specific "you").

I'm originally from Ohio, and the people in the area I came from pronounce Ohio a-hi-a.  For years I pronounced wash warsh. Then one day someone told me, "There's no r in wash."  And that is just to mention a few. But I don't care how others pronounce their words or how well they are able to write, I just like to communicate with people from everywhere.

I just finished reading Country Required for the first time, which is similar to this thread.  That is an eyeopener. Fun to read.

I tried to teach my pet frog to play chess.  He really caught on to how to move the knight, but he failed learning much more than that.  But wait, frogs are not crustaceans!

Forgive me, but that thought just hopped into my mind.  We do need a rest
