did anyone consider this from our perspective? that maybe in these tough economic times with ad revenues in decline and fewer people getting memberships that things are getting harder for us? or did you think about maybe i had a reality-check conversation with my wife about why i haven't paid myself any money in the last few months because i'm not making any? or did anyone stop to say "wow, check out what chess.com has done lately. they have added all these really great free articles from GMs and IMs." those aren't free. so maybe we should get rid of the popups and at the same time make these kinds of articles premium...?

we experimented with in-line text ads (you know the ones that create links on forum posts etc) and people didn't like them. and they were always there and annoying so we got rid of them. we also haven't done interstitials (which make you wait on a full-page ad before you continue on) like gamespot.com, ign, or many other sites. and we don't put ads in the middle of our articles or forum posts. but a popunder? come on. it's not even a popup (on top of your screen) so you probably don't even know it's there until after you leave the site and then it takes 10 seconds to close (if your popup blocker hasn't already stopped it).

finally, it's not like chess.com is the only site with popunders. try cnn.com. or imdb.com. or the wall street journal. or most major travel sites. or any of the thousands of other small websites out there like chess.com who are busting tail to provide a service for free while making little to no money only to have people complain about having to spend 10 seconds of inconvenience after enjoying hours of free entertainment.

i don't like popups. i don't like ads at all. that's why we give you a super cheap option to get rid of them with low-cost memberships. but i'm not working 60+ hours a week as a hobby, and i doubt you are. we add more features, more content, and more users each day, and all that costs money - and probably much much more than you think. so if you don't value your chess.com more than the cost of a hamburger each month, or enough to spend 10 seconds to close a popup, then i don't know what to tell you.

(PS - you shouldn't be getting more than 1-2 popunders a day, and they should not make noise or show inappropriate material. if you are experiencing something different from this, please let us know so we can look into it)

Thanks for taking the time to explain why we are now getting pop ups .I dont begrudge you making money from this site and I hope you do make enough to at least pay yourself a wage. Thanks for a great site.

I never really minded them anyway.

I don't mind alot, but Erik, make sure it never goes inappropriate, and make sure you don't have these pop-ups using a computer virus. Then it would be fine to complain. Sure, it may be an attack site, so don't follow with the scam! As long as you do these things Erik, I'd be happy.

I wouldn't mind the popups so much if they weren't scams.  I can understand allowing ads to pay for expenses and make a living, but making money by giving others a chance to steal money is completely wrong.  I'm ok with popups normally, but I may start looking for another chess site if I keep seeing "Scott's money blog".

Basically, it's pretty clear. The site needs to make money, and on the internet, that pretty much means ads. Now, these pop-unders seem to be a fairly recent addition to Chess.com, and I find them pretty annoying, BUT I know that it's a free site, and so as long as they aren't trying to load viruses or software on my computer (and they haven't been), then I'm not going to complain.

I would also like to point out that these adds are of intellegence insulting grade... they could at least attempt to make them aesthetically pleasing for the 9/10's of a second I see them

Anybody care to make $100,000+ from google, btw? //psarcasm

[edit] incedentally, the more I think about it, the more it makes sense, you gotta keep this website afloat for both the free riding complaining members, and the paying, quality members alike. (Or at least as a member of the former, I would like to think that), and incedentally, a popup add that does just that in the background doesn't actually add that much clutter to the interface, it just gets annoying when you get around to closing the window... rather than just all the time. [/end edit - kissarse]

They could of put banners on when your playing your move instead of the pop ups. I don't mind either way. Everyone's got to get paid! :)

funny - most people complaining are teens still living off of mommy and daddy. once they get out of the house and start working they will realize that nothing in life is free and that everyone deserves fair compensation for their efforts. until then... enjoy the bubble of immaturity! :)

Hmmm... Fairly condescending towards (potential) future customers.

Take the high road: it’s easier to see farther and further.

Question, how does one remove their name and all other forms of identity from a site or do they get to keep your membership active even if you quit?

Avatar of styxtwo

thank god for google chrome :). but popups are really annoying.

$2.00 a month will fix it.  If you like the site it's worth it.

You obviously don't appreciate free entertainment.  You want chess.com to cater to your unpaying needs.  They are providing you with entertainment and all you can say is this?  They can't just like everyone else run a free site without having bills to pay.  Those popups shouldn't even phase you.

Since when are people that pay to be here better then those that dont?

I wouldn't mind if my entire screen got filled with a dancing banana advertising cigarettes every time I opened a page- it wouldn't make the site any worse than it is now.

(Which, by the way, is excellent.)

It's so annoying! All that these sites care about is making money, and they're about to go too far. I respect that they try to convince us to buy memberships with good features, but now they want us to buy memberships so we "won't have anymore popups?" That's just bulls**t.

Aren't they?  Paying customers get more benefits from this site.

Come on....per month, the site is cheaper than one Mocha Deluxe Carmel Machiado with extra carmel.  If you want it for free, (and mind you, you DO have that option here) you have to give up some things.  Hey, I love getting the programming from NBC, CBS, Fox, and ABC for free (essentially)...but in return, I'm subjected to commercials.  Think about what goes in to creating, maintaining, programming, advertising and bettering this site monthly.  You can't expect these guys to just give it away.  Capitalism ROCKS!!!  I hope Erik and the guys make a mint....they deserve it.

Hey Erik, I'm a teenager living off mommy and daddy, and I don't complain about free things! Do I win a prize? (One of those oh-so-elusive chess.com T-shirts wouldn't go amiss Wink)

There's only two things that they are better than those that don't. 1. It's a steady income stream, you could work out almost exactly how much money will come from your subscribers, with ads it's always going to be an educated guess. 2. The benefits that they receive, one of which is the removal of adverts.

You either pay and get benefits, or you don't pay and put up with the adverts. Seems simple to me. You've really got no right to complain about the adverts unless the content is inappropriate in which case I'm sure Erik would be happy to act. There's always going to be some people who don't like the way the adverts are done, but that's just the way it is, and Erik has broken his back to cater for as many people as possible. From the sound of it he's had a pretty rough month (quite possibly a bad day), so how about you either pay up or stop whining?

Avatar of Nytik

It's also interesting to note that even the most expensive membership is just 26 cents (about 20 pence, I would think) per day. With that kind of price... well, what could you do? Buy half a chocolate bar? I'm sure I could give that up for all the amazing site features.

And this is just the MOST expensive! The cheaper membership comes to you for just 8 cents (or 5 pence) a day... perhaps enough to buy you 5 one-penny sweets (if such a thing still exists) but other than that, money that is probably lying around your house under cushions and in your car.
