Touché Don Erik ;)

My first post was just stupid. After reading all the posts on this thread, my first thought was "What the heck? Erik's right." Because it really is just a pop-under and you can close it in 4 seconds. It doesn't damage the service of this site anyhow. This is still by far the best chess website in the world. Thanks erik, patzer, jay and all the staff for making this website wonderful!

yeah i know. i have a pop up blocker and i still get them. chess.com used to be a good site but its starting to get trashy and poor. the site just gets worse

...says the 16-year-old who joined the site 2 weeks ago. hilarious :))

A bit off topic, but how does InoYamanaka have 438 member points already only being on this site for two weeks?

Easy, at one stage when I had more PC acess, it was getting aroud 100 points a day, true forus, vote chess, groups etc..!

This topic has been an amusing one.

The fact that the creators of the site are so personally hands-on...that they have the inclination to stop by and decry/rebut the topic suggests a lot of care in the decisions that are made in regard to how to generate revenue and maintain the site.  I don't doubt that every decision is weighed carefully.  Chess.com is lovely and I suspect that's not an accident.

it is interesting how the original post in this thread become so distorted with so many angry answers--that the meaning of the original question (which had no malice) is lost

richie and oprah is right about the myopia.  I was thinking it but was too lazy to respond to psion.

I think the only issue here is if the popups are affecting the members so much that they cannot bear to play on the site.  This is clearly not the case.

Well, yes they are annoying, but they have to have sponsors to help keep the site running.

Thanks aansel , I seem to be portrayed as the disgruntled teenager in some of the posts. I was just wondering why all of a sudden I was getting lots of popups on chess.com and now I know the answer  .but I hope this post has given chess.com some insight on THEIR members views!

for what it is worth, we are working on removing some of more spammy popunders (the google scam ones). thanks for your patience.

Avatar of aansel

Thanks Erik for the follow-up those Pop-unders" are really the worst.

as for the target demographic, site not making ends meet, etc, the scoop is this: the site has exceeded all of our expectations and is a success at every level (for us). that said, it takes a lot of money to continually improve the site and develop, so we're constantly reinvesting. we didn't raise any money and so cash is tight, but manageable.

also, we didn't know what to expect in terms of users. we hoped we would get a lot of serious chess players, but we have also ended up with a huge contingent of younger beginners. i tried to get a Forrester or Gartner report on the size and demographics of the chess market, but no help... ;)

I don't know why you would remove those.  I've made thousands posting links for google because of these adds! (jk)

If they are pay for click, I'll click every time just to teach those scammers a lesson.

Erik: a huge contingent of beginners is OK. A huge contingent of agressive begginers I think it's not (unless you want to follow the yahoo model; who knows, probably you'll make more money with this choice).

How come today's hot topics were "computer anal" and "wtf stalemate"?? Tomorrow probably you'll have topics like "computer BJ" and "wtf en-passant". Well, then I wish you a sincere good luck to attrack serious players with these topics...

Avatar of mattattack99

Yeah, it is really annoying, but the website has to make money somehow.

Avatar of hic2482w

Also a bit off topic, but how do you make $5000 bucks posting links on google?

you don't - you make $5000 telling 5,000 people how to do it for $1 each. :)

Not to sound like an advertiser, but in order to keep this site going free for those who dont want to pay, well....something has to generate funds for this place..Undecided

 That's true... I'll consider upgrading,

1. Because chess.com is the best online chess website, and I want to support it,

And 2. The benefits!

I agree in part with costelus.  But I think it comes down to governing the forums.  One of the things I have been most disappointed about is the lack of quality feedback from better players in the technical forums. Its mostly a bunch of beginners giving feedback. As for the remainder of the site: its high school.

I think the site needs more mods and enforced general posting rules. I know that’s not the direction that you want to head Erik, but I think it’s a necessary evil at this point in time. Chess.com needs beat-cops.
