I read your comment to the n’th degree..Using my Ph.D in psychology,I would suggest, if trash talk upsets you, this site will unbalance your already fragile psyche. Best advice is to not indulge with communicating with other members.
Trashing talk upsetting a person =/= a fragile psyche. You'd better get a refund for that Ph.D, friend. But more to the point, I guess that my real question was whether or not this sort of brattish-ness is representative of the chess.com community overall and in general. Based upon your comments, I'm inclined to say yes!
It's not an anomaly. It's not the exception to the rule. I would say that about half the time I accept a chat, it's trash talk. It sucks. What do these people get out of it? Does it make the game more fun for them to put other people down, or what? I understand that I can disable chats during live games, which is what I've done, but I also feel kind of like that's not fair. I would love to chat with people from different parts of the world, tell someone that they played well, banter back and forth a bit. But I hate the trash talk.
Many idiots and unkind people people on the site. Mute the chat. It's easier. And ignore Hiram, he's a self confessed troll.

Lol appreciate it. I hate having to do it, but I suppose it's just easier to mute the chat and be done with it. Sucks, though. I'm sure I'm missing out on chatting with some pretty cool people. Oh well.
Ah!! I thought I recognised him! Know the blonde from somewhere…Clue?
It's a still from Alice in Wonderland

No problem. Best of luck. I wouldn't hang around these forums either if you don't like trash talk. The place is a cesspool.of spam, hate, trolls and trash.

Humans have probably been talking trash to each other since Caveman Times.
Not sure you can do much about it except mute them if you don't want to listen.
I agree with the OP .I when I get a chat request I decline. From experience,I found that the vast majority of the time requests were from trash talkers. It is unfortunate.
Getting a lot of it the last week, hope I haven't been put in the naughty bin.
Quite funny when they assume they've won and start with the comments, then you whoop them and they leave sharpish.
Assume I'm playing smart kids that think they're smarter than they really are?
There should be an adults only pool.

Yeah.
The best is when someone trash talks and you end up beating them.
I had one guy who kept telling me to resign and trash talk after I sacrificed a rook in a line against the Italian that Chigorin made famous.
I ended up checkmating him.
I sent him a message after I won and asked him "Do you still think I should resign?"
ha

Unfortunately you can't control what others will do on the Internet. So either you grow a thicker skin, or disable chat.
Stop allowing some random chess nerd on the other side of the world, sitting at a keyboard, troll you.
i do sometimes, i played some dude named ¨BULLY_BULLY¨ he trash talked the whole game but lost in 15 moves
