who the greatest chess player?

Bobby Fischer "the god of the gods" .
He was certainly the best and not only for the three years of the world title.

Come on! What is there not to like about Kasparov. Entertaining and a genious. :-)

Capablanca was nicknamed "The Chess Machine" because even great players felt he was unbeatable. But, Tal could qualify if only he played more games. He could conjure up sacrifices when no one would even think of them.
If Tal played more games?! Do you realize Tal played about 2000 games more than Capablanca did ?! It seems you don't.

I do like Kasparov its just Bobby Fisher had won much more tournaments and has a higher fide rating, also he's Canadian

Ya you gotta admit that Tal is also amazing as in short blitz games he could come up with such amazing sacrifices.

steinitz invented (or codified principles that now form) the way everyone plays chess. but he knew that morphy was the better player...but Lasker was champ for 27 years thats impressive...but Capa was unbeaten for 8 years, also impressive...Alekhine was a giant amonst giants...botvinik won the title three times (and lost it as many) but was also a dominate force before he took the title... and yes fischers rise to the championship match was spectacular...but Kasparov stayed on top of the ratings charts for so long...darn hard call...I love Lasker, so thats my say
Garry Kasparov!
