Have you seen the price of e-boards?   Its like buying a set of golf clubs or a nice tennis racket and paying for the privilege to play on a court.  Most people never have to pay for a basketball or football coach.  Its free.  They don't even have to pay fees to enter tournaments or play professionally.  Its free.  Someone mentioned homeless people playing chess.  If thats true they probably charge you just for the privilege of playing with them,  like the "hustlers" in the parks of NYC we watch on youtube lol.

You don't need to pay for anything in Chess, it's free. Gold and Tennis aren't. If you feel you want to improve and would benefit from a coach then ofc it's not free. You really think people coach Basketball or Football etc for free? That's only if you go to a school or college or something that pays them anyway. You are so delusional about things man, holy.

How is chess free but Tennis isn't?  Please explain.     And yes I do really think people coach basketball and football for free, starting in school.    "only if you go to school"   So you ask a question and then answer it yourself, and then pretend you have some counter point?   cute... hahah.  Thanks for proving me right.

And let me clarify,  obviously we can play other people online for free.   But when it comes to OTB i can tell you right now,  I will have noone to play unless its with an e-board online or I pay fees to join some club. Period.

If you are in School you get coached in Chess for free in a lot of places. What are you on about? You compare Chess club fees with owning a proper Golf club set and paying to go to a golf course... those are much more expensive. You are so delusional about things. You are persistently crazy on these forums.

Maybe in South Africa.  Not in America.  None of my schools even had a chess club.  Only in the movies lol.  I've never even seen people play chess on the chess tables in the parks.   I'd have to join a club to find other people to play with OTB.

Ask around your local library.

Once you are "in" in the local chess community, you will find out more places people like to gather and play. It is surprising how much chess is played without formal invitations or announcements.

But lets stay on topic,  If someone wants to get into playing Chess tournaments,  amateur or otherwise, one way or the other they are going to have to shell out cash.  Just like alot of other "high society" games.     For the equipment,  the registration,  the club fees and the coaching fees.

The standard UScF tournament usage plastic set (the one you see at pretty much all tournaments) is somewhere around 15 bucks on house of Staunton, the same website that has 10,000 usd chessboards. A clock is about $30 give or take depending on what kind you get.

how much is the registration fee to the club,  or to the fide tournament?   so far $45 at a minimum.   When to play basketball at the park is free.      I sure wish I spoke Russian.  I bet Fatality is getting good lessons from her coach here.  Fatality is trained by GM Farrukh Amonatov - YouTube

Who said it's free to play basketball in a park?

That is true. And if it’s a multi day hotel tournament then there are hotel fees as well. But it really depends on how you plan to play. For example if you just want to play at a local tourney once in a while then fifty bucks is perfectly reasonable, and online chess is free as well.

You can't really compare going to chess tournaments with playing basketball in a park.

Playing basketball in a park is equal to playing friendly chess games with someone- a friend, member of a family or something like that, not playing a chess tournament.

I don't know where you people live but I never met anyone that played chess in my lifetime or know anyone that ever did.   One must join a chess club to have others to play with OTB.   Which requires paid dues.  Even $50 is  alot for a couple  kids with no money for example just for a chess set and clock.    When they can play ball in the park for free.

And as Bizmark pointed out we are forgetting about travel fees.

I Just learned fatality's coach is actually a pretty well known GM and coach in the chess community .  Lucky girl lol.

That is different, but as far as I can see, you are in the minority here, many people in this topic have someone to play chess with.

In any case, chess tournament is a rated official competition, and as such can't be compared to playing basketball in a park. It can be compared to playing basketball for some club, and that costs money as well.

So you can argue that because of lack of popularity, OTB chess is inaccessible to some people, but saying that it is a sport for the rich is simply not true. In USA you have to have some money if you want to become a professional, because they probably have to travel to Europe at least from time to time to play some tournaments to earn their titles. That is the reason why USA doesn't have that many GMs, and that is understandable.

But for some amateur, this is certainly not the case. Look at how many people from India play on chess.com. Do you really think that they are all billionaires? happy.png

Even if you look at the GMs, you will not find many millionaires there, perhaps at the very top, but in general they are not some rich snobs playing chess.

But after you admit the first statement your second statement becomes irrelevant.   Because it would actually be the equivalent of having to play basketball for some club,  to be able to have someone to play basketball with.

And I think the point of this thread,  is even when joining the club,  most likely you will want to get a coach to be able to keep up unless one is provided by the club.

India is set to be as popular as Russia for chess pretty soon.   And I don't know if you are assuming most Indians are poor,  but I do know the ones that move to America have loads of cash.  I'm from Queens, NYC.

Not all of course, but many are poor, there are 1.3 billion people there, and GDP per capita is 1 900$.

It is not irrelevant. Maybe for you it is, as you don't have anyone to play chess with OTB, but as you can see many people in this topic know people who can play chess with for free. And many of those people are from USA as well.

And I am sure there are many places in the world where playing basketball is not as accessible as in Queens, New York.

I find that hard to believe in the USA without a club and when after joining would feel pressured to have a coach to keep up.  Travelling fees,  it all costs money.     who are these "many people" you are even referring to.  I'm conversing with mostly people out of my country it seems.  And you just implied Indians are poor when most Indians I know are well off and its the reason they were able to come to America in the first place.

I gave you a statistical input. 1900 $ a year on average in India, a country of 1.3 billion people, so who you know in USA is not that relevant (you can know about 1 000 people from India, it is still just a statistical error). The fact remains, many people from India love chess are able to play it in person, and I am sure that most of them are not rich.

And many other countries that are not rich have many great chess players and even more amateurs, most of which are not rich.

Who are these many people? Just go through the topic, and you will see that almost nobody agreed with your assessment that chess is a sport for the rich. happy.png

Richest Guy On Chess.com - Chess Forums - Chess.com   Look at the reply on this thread.  I think you are forgetting that India is a big country with a whole lot of people man.

So, you are linking me a story about the guy who got banned for engine usage against Vishy Anand? happy.png Nice. In any case, on 1 such person there are probably a million people in India that are not well of. That is what 1 900$ per year on average means.

I didn't say that there are no billionaires in India, but it doesn't change the fact I have stated. I mean if you are trying to tell me that an average person in India is wealthier than that from USA, you go right ahead. happy.png

Only relevant if you now give the statistic on how many families making that have kids playing in chess clubs.    How many people even play on the street?  You don't have to be "rich" to play Tennis or Golf either, but you certainly can't be poor.    Because the fact is,  it does cost money and is still considered a high society sport because of that fact.

Tennis and golf are different. You need a tennis court and in most cases you have to rent one just to play a friendly non official game with a friend. This is not the case for chess.
