If people found out that I wasn't a cartoon character I'd be in trouble.
SHHH! They haven't figured out my real identity either. And that, my friend, has more than one meaning. ;)
No, not that one. Or that one.

On a (less?) serious note, I'd still like to know the opinions of people who've actually posted pictures of themselves. Thanks. :)
I thought long and hard before I finally decided to use a real photo of myself for my avatar here.
Standing in front of an identifiable landmark could increase your susceptibility to stalkiness.
Hey artfizz I recognized that tree behind you and the only place have it is at the Buckingham Palace !
Well, to answer the question directly -- I don't think the OP is paranoid to ask this, as people's photos have been misused here on the site. The ones I am aware of involved women players here. When I was originally here almost 2 years ago (naively using my name and photo and posting the town where I lived), there was the habit of some creeps to download a woman's photo and post it as their own avatar, or to post it to their own pages as one of their favourite photos... and other creepy, stalker-like stuff. I was in a women's team here and the discussion revealed other similar things going on with their images. Many of us chose to just use non-descript images and to remove any personal info... and I will never again post an avatar with my children in it, for instance.
Sorry if some above feel that is paranoid. Unfortunately, it's experience.
Yes. Definitely not "paranoia". I see hundreds of strangers a week, working as a bartender/waitress. Some guy here actually thought I lived in Ann Arbor now, so he said he was going to be in Ann Arbor soon, and would find me(he didn't like my opinions). If I'd have put up my picture and where I live, it would have been very creepy if he would have walked into the restaurant I work at(he had a picture of himself as an avatar). Maybe he smashes pink flowers into the ground instead
Well spotted! However, although you've identified the location of the tree, the image is composite to protect the identity of my real tree.
we will never find each other casuse you are down here looking for me in Perth while I am up there in london looking for you !!
I'm examining satellite and aerial photos so I don't have to travel to Perth (at least, not until I've tracked you down). Perth, you say: how far away from you is the ocean?
What if artfizz reversed left and right in that photo? Then the sun would actually be on the other side, meaning for that same time of day he would have to be located in the southern hemisphere instead of the U.K. like he claims . . . unless he also turned around and faced the other direction for the photo just to throw us off . . .
Nah, he probably just cropped out part of some photo that came with his wallet and used that.
You can post a picture of yourself if you like; for all I know, that may not be a picture of you at all. Just don't be an idiot and give away your address or anything like that. I had a picture of myself up once, but thought this one better fit my name.
Mine is an old picture. It's just a head shot. Besides, in this day privacy is an illusion. If someone really wanted to find me they could.
george-lucas, ernest hemingway and marilyn-monroe seems to be some of the worst copy-cats.
Don't get me wrong - I'm very open-minded and am not strictly against doing this. However, when you consider the fact that thousands of people (including a lot of creepy, sketchy ones) may look at your photographs and / or see your name... Well, something clicks in me to avoid any such thing. I severely doubt anything bad would happen if I posted my picture up here. But it's still very discomforting. Maybe I'm just thinking this over too much - but this is a website for CHESS, after all.
What do you guys / girls think?
I don't think you should have to post a real picture of yourself either.
I post pictures of myself because I am naive (basically believing most people are good-hearted deep down) and I crave attention and admiration.
And don't accept any marriage proposals unless you know what you're getting yourself into.
There's a street in Dallas where that's good advice too . . .
Lots of avatar pictures are fictional, lots of men post pretending to be women and I imagine a few women pretending to be men.
If you're seeking out opponents based on gender or avatar pic there's something wrong with you. And don't accept any marriage proposals unless you know what you're getting yourself into.
Someone on another website I go to wrote ma a letter saying if I would marry him he would be my slave. I sent him a note back saying, "You're crazy! I'm not looking for a husband or a slave."
pdela, since that's obviously you, wouldn't you be worried that somebody would try to use your picture for something like... HAIR CARE ADS? And you wouldn't get royalties! The HORROR!
I seriously think we all know the chances of getting stalked are very, very small. The main worry is that you're giving people the rights to use your photographs in any way they choose. Sure, you might be posting somebody else's picture - but then how would THEY feel about this? Oh, probably the same way you'd feel if your picture was hijacked. There's a circular logic here.
And it SUCKS. I still don't understand why you guys would actually choose to show yourselves to the weird public that is chess.com...

It's not just Chess.com, it's the internet.

I'm not even talking about those that are stupid enough to post pictures of themselves on random websites (chess.com being one I consider safer than most sites). Why somebody would post a picture of themeslves, their name and address on iwanttogetbeatenandrapedbyyou.com beats me. Almost literally.
Paranoia on stilts !
Jesus, man. The vertigo... it's killing me up here. I'm sorry if I get your shirt messed up. I mean, it's not such a wonderful, great shirt, so I'm sure I'll be able to compensate you.
