I play piano, that's funny I didn't recognise it
Why do we have to [use Captcha]?
I'm pleased that people liked my little tongue-in-cheek captcha example.
The point, of course, is that robots are not good at aesthetic judgements.
Oh. I wondered why I couldn't click on it
A robot! Burn him! Withhold his oil can!
Captcha's are inaccessible by nature. They immediately disqualify anyone with any sort of impairment. If there were apps out there that could translate the captcha's for the impaired, then they could do the same for bots. People with impairments should be able to register themselves as so, so they don't have to feel disheartened every time they want to send a simple DM.
It's disgusting and completely discriminatory.
.
whats really sad is the fact they need to do it in the first place
I agree that the captchas are a) annoying, and in the case of these scrambled ones on Chess.com, difficult even for those of us with excellent eyesight b) discriminatory against those with visual difficulties (there should, at least, be multiple ways of doing a captcha, for example, selecting audio instead).
A cheaper solution that should make almost everyone happy:
At the very least, captchas can and should be automatically disabled between friends. That way, spam will be limited by people's willingness to receive such. That way, people who are friends can add each other, people who coordinate a lot regards groups, leagues, etc can add each other, and >80% of on-site messaging communication that isn't just "Hi" from random people will be captcha-free.

I would vote for that, if this were a Democracy.
Yayyyy they removed captcha 😂
It's good to see they listen and care about our responses..
If it's removed, it's because the spam attack subsided or was otherwise resolved.
It's good to see that they don't care about our responses actually. Thanks for pointing that out.
It has to do with what the spam attack does to the site. If they did nothing, it would be worse.
Just so long as it isn't a permanent feature, I think we can understand and cope with it.
Maybe I'm stupid but, don't most spam attacks come from new accounts?
Not necessarily. I'm not privy to the specifics, but I know that some abusers will create multiple accounts and sit on them until ready to use them. Some spammers likely follow a similar pattern.
I've made suggestions in the past on the CAPTCHA to be more targeted, ones that would impact fewer members, but don't know how likely they are to get implemented.
Really?😂
