Some people enjoy always having a move to make-approaching each game more as a study position to be solved than a continuous game.
Others may have issues (health, social, career) that allot them a lot of free time. In that case, you really do have time for hundreds of games.
As for me, ten is enough :)
I currently just went up to over 160, (mostly unrated greeter games) and this was for a lot of reasons.
1. I like to always have a move to make.
2. It allows me to see a lot more positions, which, even though it might not help my rating here, will improve my chess.
3. many more that I cannot think of/am too lazy to write down.

There was a player here that had over 3000 games at one time ..... I havent seen more than that yet !
Man! 3,000? I would think that the server would crash with that guys games and everyone else's.

That is an insane number!!! I would do it though if I didn't have other things to do besides chess. I would love to play all day long!

I know that there are players with hundreds of games going with lower-rated players with the aim of piling up rating points quickly in a misguided attempt to reach number 1.
how? you don't get any points if you win against low-rated opposition.
For some people quantity is more important than quality. They are probably the same people who, in a 5 minute + 3 seconds/move, try to finish with the game with more time than they started with.
