Have I got this right if you pay for your premium membership upfront for the year you get an extra 4 months, so your renewal date is 16 months later?
No. If you pay up front, you get 12 months for the price of 8 months at the full monthly rate.

Well I can't figure that out, I have just taken out gold membership at a price of £24-99 for the year and by paying monthly it would cost £2-08 per month. Where is the advantage in paying yearly as it states on chess.com (Yearly 4 months off)
I think you are reading that wrong (and missing the asterisk) - 2.08 x 12 = the 24.99 and the asterisk next to the 2.08 refers to the price per month (based on 12 months) if you pay for a year.
Right above the box for the Gold there are the words "Monthly" and "Yearly (4 months off)". Click on "Monthly" and the prices change.
