Personally I've always found Q+K vs R+K the hardest. It's only supposed to take something like 30 moves at the most, but I often struggle to get it done in less than 50. Nice find here though. Not often you'll see someone actually make a GM play that out, even if it's blindfold :).
Bishop + Knight checkmate
Notice the black king takes opposition(places itself so there is an odd number
of squares(in this case one square)) with the white king 7 times in this puzzle!
Thank you so much for this posting! Blindfolded, Judit Polgar wins in only 22 moves! I have heard it takes 30 to 40 moves to mate with a Bishop and Knight against a lone King. I have yet to come to this ending, but I am looking forward to it.
franco, you encountered a B+N endgame twice already? That's astounding for such a rare endgame.
And Travis, maybe they should make GMs play it out more often! In Robert Kempinski vs. Vladimir Epishin in Bundesliga, Germany, 2001, Epishin failed to mate Kempinshi despite reaching a Bishop and knight endgame with considerable time left on the clock. Epishin apparently tried to mate Kempinshi in the wrong corner twice, and eventually stalemated him several moves after Kempinshi could have claimed a draw by the fifty move rule. Full(er) story here.
If 50 moves have gone by in a row where neither player has either moved a pawn or captured a peice, it is a draw.
If 50 moves have gone by in a row where neither player has either moved a pawn or captured a peice, it is a draw.
Only if a player claims the draw.
the easiest method for me is described in this youtube-movie:

i have learned it some years ago, just because i was interested. However now i am actually playing a game with a B+N mate:

So far in my 103 games played in chess.com i have only reached two times a position where the only pieces left were a bishop and a knight (plus the two kings). In both games my opponent didn´t know that a bishop and a knight could give mate.
The B+N mate is one of the basic chess endings and for sure the most difficult one.
You don´t believe me?
The most amazing fact about this game is that it was played in a blindfold tournament!!
In this positions i like to use the Deletang`s method, you can find hundred of explanations on the web.
Good luck!
