Endgame Strategy: What to exchange?

A vital part of any chess players understanding is how to handle endgames!  What pieces should you trade is a very important concept.  Lets discuss important endgame considerations that could have happened today. My opponent (SilverEleak) and I, agreed to a draw before the end.  After the game, we were discussing what pieces each side would prefer to hold for the upcoming endgame, and we were a little bit torn between a couple of ways to go.  What do you guys think should happen?  From each players perspective, discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each possible trade. Thanks everyone!

Well, what I would look into would be that white's knight is almost trapped and the black queen and the bishop on d6 is located on the diagonal towards h2 and that black has the move. Something like this:

3. Qh8+ looks good for White. He can first trade queens, then post the knight on d4.

How would white force a queen trade?

As far as I can see he gets the h6 pawn after 3. Qh8+ if black plays Bxh2 after the knight has moved to d4. But black might be able to put in Nf7. Hmm, your post certainly underlines my remark "Looks as if there can be lots of tactics in this position" in the start of the diagram I posted.

You're right you can't force the trade, but White looks better after

1... g5 looks awful loose to me there, and 2... e4 is even more precipitous. You also have to consider the possibility of 3 Qf6+.

I think 1... g5 would be fine, to just kick the Knight though, don't spend time trapping it and instead make a move like Nc6.

Maybe so.  I would definitely tread that position with caution though.

interesting stuff guys!  We went through some calculation of what could happen, but we haven't adressed the purpose of the forum.  to discuss different types of endgames via. different exchanges of the pieces.  What we should discuss is which pieces to exchange.  We can make diagrams with say Q+B vs. Q+B (that is, we exchange 2 minor pieces)...etc.  There are many different possible minor piece exchanges that lead to advantages and disadvantages for each side. Here is the king and pawn endgame, that is.  If al the pieces are exchanged!  Who is better here?

By discussing the advantages and disadvantages of different possible piece exchanges, we can figure out the correct mindset that we should have, when approaching the position.  Instead of calculating random moves (lol)

Here is my opinion:

Probable exchanges:

#1. Trading Black (squared) bishops: probably favors black, do to the fixed queenside pawns (as you typically want a bishop of the same color as your opponent's pawns).

#2. Trading White bishops: favors white, same reason as #1.

#3. Trading a Knight for a bishop: probably favors the side who ends up with two bishops, but I don't really know.....

#4. Trading Queens: probably favors black, as the white has a passed pawn which means white should (according to chess.com's very own chess mentor!) try to keep his queen and trade off minor pieces....

#5. All Trades in general: favor white, as he almost certainly has a winning king and pawn endgame with the protected passed c4 pawn!

I would much rather calculate "random moves" than engage in a lot of airy babbling.

The game was less than half way finished and you both agreed to a draw?

I think people see grandmasters do it and think that they should. That's only because they already understand it.

Like this, white clearly didn't get the endgame but was happy to draw http://www.chess.com/forum/view/endgames/is-white-better
