Extraordinarily Rare Checkmate Pattern....

I personally would not consider this a case of the swallowtail mate. However, the theme does lead to some interesting pure mates (where there is exactly one reason why the king cannot move to any of its possible escape squares).

Is the OP a troll account?

Funny Alex. Many-many people have looked at this checkmate pattern and interesting that noone has said that they've seen it before.

I would say that-that qualifies for something other than being a troll. IOW's, I kinda take offence to that....but then it's coming from you, so that qualifies for nothing Tongue Out .

I just find it interesting that it's a bare King without fellow piece hinderance. It's open board chess and the strong side King is irrelevant.

Doesn't that count for something ?

Yes, it counts.

The absence of the defending king's own pieces restricting his mobility is an element in the descriptions of both the epaulet and swallowtail checkmates. Although the geographic pattern of control by the attacking king resembles these two, the other squares are controlled by the weakest possible hostile pieces.

Perhaps that merits a distinct name. I think the shape of the control of the attacking pieces resembles a small table. Maybe the French word for small table would be appropriate here. I believe Renaud and Kahn have something to say in this regard.

Although the pattern is not frequent, I have seen it in books and worksheets. I don't recall when or where, but I've constructed it hundreds of times for my students.

Usually, thus:

I want someone to show me....in text....where this pattern is shown. Good luck in one's search. You're gonna need it !

In that respect it is like the Swan mate.

Well, swans mate for life....unless there's a nesting glitch....they say. BTW, how does a Swan Mate go ?

Also, I wish there was a Boatswain's (Bosun's) Mate....Smile....

Laszlo Polgar, Chess Training in 5334 Positions. These are mate in one, so the pattern is not pictured, precisely.

Less that 30 minutes after you posted your challenge.

All King-dependent.....& that doesn't count. Sorry Ziryab - but good try.

Was posted seven minutes after my example that used the king. For someone whose initial diagram fails to produce an FEN that is mate in one (despite your claim), I think that you have not earned the right to exclude my examples.

You do the work. Your pattern is in Polgar. I found two instances in a few minutes.

Nice bulldog.

Okay. Lemme put it this way. Go and find another checkmate w/ Queen and (2) pawns (no King) out on the open board (no edges count).

Good luck on that one.

You see ?....that's what makes this so unique. It neaks up on you.

I hereby lay claim to the Ghostess Mate from the day b4 yesterday forward.

So, your first post was a ruse. You needed to move the goalposts after posting.

Knights, as in Polgar #58, are banned, too.

I may become famous for creating the Swan mate, but then again, it may not happen. I decided I need at least one more mate to my credit as a backup. I now have the position, and am still working on a name for it. In the meantime, I will give you the conditions for my new mate and you can see if you can find it or one like it.

1. The lone black king must be on one of the four center squares.
2. The white pieces besides the king must consist of two knights, a white-square bishop, and a black-square bishop.
3. The white king may participate but must be within one move of an edge square.
4. It must be a pure mate (every square in the black king's field must be attacked only once).
5. It must be a legal position (one that can be reached by a series of legal moves).
6. It must be at least as interesting as the Ghostess mate.

I have now come up with a name for my new mating position. After 10 hours, apparently no one has found a position meeting the conditions, so I have posted it below. Note that the black king and the four white pieces would form a cross if the e4 bishop were at e5, but it has dropped down a square. Therefore this position will be known as the Fallen Priest mate. The white king represents the Heavenly Father above looking down at the fallen bishop. You can check out this position to verify it meets the given conditions.

Go to Checkmate Patterns on the interment....I mean internet.

Some of those are so hellaredundant....it's hilariously silly. Alotta times they were first used in a famous game and then got a moniker that I feel's unjustified.
