How to start studying endgames

I'm thinking of studying endgames. Where should I start and how should I study them? (I'm 1700 rapid) Right now I know a little bit about opposition and that's about it.

I've been working through dvorestky endgame, people says its complex but i think it is suitable for your level. I really like how the book builds from the foundation and then builds upon itself

Start with 3 men, then 4 men, then 5 men.

This site has some of the basics covered in the lessons. Then check out the Endgame Bootcamp on Chessable, followed by Jesús de la Villa's 100 Endgames You Must Know. Many people recommend Silman's Complete Endgame Course. While I'm a big fan of Silman, I find this book tedious and unnecessarily drawn out, but that's a matter of taste. Dvoretsky's Endgame Manual has become a bit of a meme, but to me it does not seem as unapproachable as people make it to be (though I haven't worked through it - yet).

IMO for someone starting near zero a reasonable order might be:

1. a thin book on endgame basics. Averbackh has a 100 page book that is pretty good but there are many.

2. 'Endgame strategy' and Chernev's book 'Capablanca's greatest endings' .

3. Then when you play and get and endgame in your own game, look up the type in Dvoretsky and study the chapter. (This is because studying a type of ending doesnt mean you'll retain what you study. If you study one right after playing one it makes it easier to retain as you're connecting it with recent events.)

By the time you are thru with step 2 and into step 3 you'll know what to do next!

Other books I really like are Giddins book 'Greatest ever chess endings'' , Marin's book 'Learn from the legends'', Gelfer's book 'Positional chess handbook'' which is basically 500 endgames sorted by theme, and almost any endgame book by Mednis (currently I',m working thru 'Practical Knight endings' and it's great).  - Bill
