Video Lesson for Lucena Position

Blog For Lucena Position in details

Lucena Postion

In Rook and pawn vs. Rook endings, there are three basic principles:

  1. I)The passed pawn must be supported by the King.
  2. II)The defending King must be kept as far as possible from the passer. This is done by cutting off the defending King with the Rook, either on the rank or file.

III)                For attacker and defender, the Rook is best when placed behind the passer.

Always keep these principles in mind.

Lucena Position is the study of by Luis Ramirez Lucena, published 500 years ago . The lucena position is as valid today as it was then. In lucena position white will build a bridge, an effective strategy for all pawn positions (b-, c-, d-, e-, f-, and g-pawns) except those with the a-and h-pawns.

"I just learned the Lucena Postion, which, had I known it a month ago, could have led to a win in a game I ultimately lost because of poor endgame technique. How does one queen the pawn? (I've found it doesn't matter what black does here. With proper technique, you can queen the pawn. 1 Rf2+ Kg8 2 Rf4 Rc2 3 Ke7 Re2+ 4 Kd6 Rd2+ 5 Ke6 Re2+ 6 Kd5 Rd2+ 7 Rd4" - imsighked2 (~1 day ago)

"Is 1 Ra2 an alternate way to win?" - kindaspongey (~1 day ago)

"yes that would be the case @kindaspongey. the 'Real Lucena' is with the black rook on a1, the king on e8/g7, the white rook on d2 and the white pawn on e7" - cjxchess16 (~1 day ago)

"Is 1 Rd8 a nonLucena way for White to win?" - kindaspongey (~7 hours ago)

kindaspongey

"No, because it doesn't win. 1 Rd8 is met by Ra7 and black can force a draw easily (1. Rd8 Ra7 2. Rd6 Ra8+ Rd8 Ra7 ...)" - BobbyTalparov (~6 hours ago)

"What about 1 Rd8 Ra7 2 Rc8 ?" - kindaspongey (~5 hours ago)

"Ra3 - if you ever move your king out, the rook checks it (i.e. Kd8 Rd3+) until it goes back or until you draw the game due to repetition because you do not know that the Lucena Position is the only way to win this." - BobbyTalparov (~5 hours ago)

"After 1 Rd8 Ra7 2 Rc8 Ra3 3 Kd8 Rd3+ 4 Kc7, what does Black do?" - kindaspongey (~4 hours ago)

If I am reading things correctly, BobbyTalparov was logged in about an hour ago and has logged out again.

"Are you going to tell us what you think Black does after 1 Rd8 Ra7 2 Rc8 Ra3 3 Kd8 Rd3+ 4 Kc7 ... ?" - kindaspongey

"The answer to your question is already in [my 'Ra3' post]. Black will check the king until he goes back behind the pawn or repeats the position." - BobbyTalparov

"So you don't see any potential problem for Black after 4...Rc3+ 5 Kb7 Rb3+ 6 Ka6, etc. ?" - kindaspongey

"It seems I made an error in my analysis somewhere (see why it is in important to study endgames happy.png).
