Endgame Puzzle: July 8, 2009

"If you like the puzzles . . . track me :-)."

Hi folks, today I figured I would do a number of puzzles.  It seems that the audience is varied in strength, so I will try to put three puzzles: easy, intermediate, and difficult.  For more in depth coverage, track me from my homepage and check out the "Engames for Dummies Like Me" series on my page's content.

Can you name this great endgame player?

*Disclaimer - Some of the problems have multiple solutions.  However, I will give the solution that I feel is an easier pattern to recognize or better technique.  If you click the move list, sometimes I put alternate moves.  I welcome discussion and feel free to ask or answer a person's question on the message boards! *

Hope you enjoy!

Level:  Easy (Although tricky for my good friend Avneet!)

Level:  Intermediate

Level:  Difficult

That first one was a little tricky; all three are great. I need work on that triangulation thing...

All three were good puzzles. I'm curious though, how often do you encounter a situation like the Intermediate puzzle? I've yet to encounter one on my stay here on the site, but then again I ran into my first King/Pawn endgame (I won, thanks to the Chess Mentor) two days ago as well so it's good to learn the techniques.

Iron,  I run into triangulation and outflanking in just about every game ... especially over the board against higher rated opponents... rarely does someone lose a piece or anything like that so it usually always comes down to the last 10 minutes of time control and the endgame in my experience.  The endgame was my weakest area and I started studying hard to try to make it better... I got tired of winning in the middle game and then losing by some simple endgame technique :-)

You are right about the first one being tricky, I have seen people resign in similar positions.

the first and the last one were good ,i mean not that difficult but the middle one (i had to see 90percent of the moves) was rather unexpected and  difficult ...in the sense that it was an intermediate puzzle... good puzzle keep up the good work!

Thanks, very good and instructive puzzles!

The young man in the picture should be Sergey Kariakin (not sure about the spelling, Sergej Karjakin in the German version), am I right?
