Queen Endgames

I'm currently struggling with Queen endgames in two of my games here at Chess.com.  It's a long time since I can remember playing a Queen (and Pawn) endgame and I'm starting to remember why they are so hard.

The Queen is so powerful that you always need to be on guard against so many threats against your pawns and your king.  Even if you are up a few pawns, your opponent could manage to draw by perpetual check!

Here is a game featuring a Queen ending that seems to go on for ever. The game is a whopping 187 moves long! (H/T The Chess Mind).

If you're the one with the more valuable passed pawns you need to try to force a queen trade or push your pawns as soon as he fails one check on your king. You can force trade of queens by forking his king and queen in a position where your queen is protected.

I'm a truly lazy player. When it comes down to it I always attempt to trade queens in those kinds of endgames. Experts say those are the most difficult endgames to play especially in time trouble.

In queen and pawn endgames, the advancement of passed pawns is crucial. The advancement of the passed pawns is more important than the number of pawns you have. Also, centralizing your queen is a must since from the center it prevents the opposing queen from coming to useful squares. These kinds of endgames are usually very long and you have to watch for perpetual checks at all times. Have fun converting those endgames!Wink
