Three knights vs lone king?

I know this never actually occurs, but when I try to do it, I am always able to get the king to the edge and all, but I can never seem to finish it off!

You could try out setting up a check mate position and move backwards in order to find out how to get there.

An easy way to find solutions is by doing it on the Nalimov Endgame Tablebases:

A cool exception is at the end of a study by Kasparyan.

Okay, here is what the tablebase says after the position in which white has made the least progress:

I think it all depends, you can force the king to the corner with one knight but cannot finish it off because the stalemate problem. So a third or even fourth knight does not solve that problem. But maybe you can force the king to the corner with 3 knights and immediately checkmate? It usually depends on the position though..

I started experimenting with three knights because it was the only material against a lone king (that I could think of) that wasn't just material added on top of an already easily won ending.

I don't agree. Study-like positions like these are very good for learning to see patterns and piece cooperation. Study pawnless endgames and learn a lot about the pieces, their strength and weaknesses.

JMB2010- What if after e1=anything Nf3+ Kanywhere Nxe1 what if black doesn't recapture? Doesn't two knights have winning chances against a knight, because what would be stalemate isn't?

 No, its an easy draw.

I remember i lost in a 95 move epic to a guy who promoted three pawns all to knights, and who only had that plus a king  and i lost like 15 moves before 50 move draw rule would take effect

here is the game

I thought seriously

Am I missing something, not that it can't be done but a 1259 rating pulling off a spectator play of events like that and for show at that or possibly to just to see if he could do it seems unlikely for a Chess n00b like me. Perhaps live Chess is different than 3 day games.
