I have a quick question concerning the movement of the king usu in an endgame scenario that as I understand it is known as triangulation (strategicaly moving it so as to force a certain conclusion.)
Put simply, is there a certain logic or heuristic that you can use when determining when and how to implement this? I've downloaded the program Kata Chess in the d/l section, and while it is certainly useful and appropriate in many scenarios, I don't always see why it is that one specific pattern of movement is used versus another (I know that is is hard to understand w/o seeing the exact scenarios). It seems to be used mainly to proved support to pieces immediately prior to a mate and to harry a kind into a particular position. Does it have other uses?
I know that is is something of a meaningless post, I have just never seen this used in any organized fashion and am trying to better understand it so I can incorporate it into my game (assuming I can make it to an endgame with anyone here).
triangulation ONLY comes up in king and pawn endgames. it happens when you need to make your opponent waste a move. i'm not sure you can systematize it more than that...
In order to fully understand triangulation you have to first understand Opposition and Zugzwang. Triangulation is a technique that you use in order to bring about a favorable occurence of Opposition or Zugzwang. Opposition and Zugzwang both depend on who has the move. Triangulation is a technique to make a particular manoever take a move longer so that you reverse who has the move at the end of the manoever. So if you envision a future position where the outcome of that position depends on who has the move, then you want to consider whether you can use triangulation affect who has the move in your favor.
