Examples of common misunderstandings in chess:

1. Thinking that pawns can move forward and backward – when in fact, pawns can only move forward, not backward.

2. Thinking that check automatically wins – when in fact, check doesn't necessarily win; only checkmate ends the game.

3. Misunderstanding pawn promotion – many people think pawns can only become queens, when in fact, they can also become knights, bishops, or rooks.

The first two points are very questionable but the last one is true even with low elo players.

One that happened was in chess club was people thought that the knight could only move if the path was not blocked.

They think you just made up the en passant rule on the spot.

There's not much but I've come across people who had misconceptions like

We can't castle if the rook is under attack or we can castle out of check

We can make an en passant capture on a later turn
