400 rated: how good

Hi. In my rapid and daily games I am nearing 1100, but I am struggling to get my blitz games up to the same level. In fact I can't even get it up to 600, at least for very long. Is this normal? I know it requires the ability to think under much greater time pressure, but I find often that even 400 rated players are thrashing me, and I can't help but get suspicious that they are cheating. Am I being paranoid and do I just need to keep practising playing under blitz time pressures? Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

Hi, my recomendation is to focus on rapid a bit more and do alot of puzzles aswell as looking at youtube videos on your openings, in games aim to get in familiar positions that you are comfortable in. If you are a beginner you will really need to get used to the themes and main ideas yet, you will know you have got it when you know how to take advantage of your opponents mistakes (why I recomend rapids over blitz to start with). I dont think most players at 400 would be cheating especially with 3 or 5 mins time control, a good software would be needed which most people who would want to cheat, are not that determined that they would download a software to do so.This is what I recomend since it is what I went through when I was a beginner. Hope this helps!

Thanks for the advice. To be honest, that's exactly what I have been doing. I was way down at 500 in my rapid and daily games too a while back, but by essentially leaving blitz games altogether and focusing on rapid and daily games, as well as watching a tonne of content, I have slowly passed 1000, which I consider an achievement, haha, although of course when you hear YT content-makers talking about people with my rating they still consider me to be a beginner! It is only now, that I have made huge progress with my rapid games, that I am trying my hand at blitz games again, but perhaps as you've suggested it's still too soon. Again, I really appreciate the time you have taken to give me some very helpful advice.

My question really is whether it's quite normal for there to be such a rating discrepancy between rapid and blitz games.

Rapid ratings are inflated compared to blitz ratings, especially at lower levels. At around 2000 level rapid and blitz ratings are the same. It is normal to be 1100 rapid and several hundreds of points lower rated at blitz. In fact, the average blitz rating for 1100 rapid players is 900, so your blitz is sub pair compared to your rapid, but don't worry, that's also normal, there are many people like you https://www.chessratingcomparison.com/Graphs

Yes that's normal.

It takes the brain an acceleration to be able to keep track of your structural integrity while blitzing out moves - they can easily become mindless. So even in blitz, the best players are way ahead of the board in their thinking. That's the exercise.

You'll be stumped to find that the elo difference between online and FIDE can be about 400 points. So my 1800 is only 1400 IRL - and your 400, well...

Thanks. I'm interested to know why my rapid rating is inflated?

Send me one of your games and I'll be happy to analyze the game for free on my YouTube channel on Sunday livestream from 1-2PM PST.  Ask me questions in real time!

This is a great way to improve!

Here’s more  ideas to help you get better.

-I recommend two books for you: “50 Poison Pieces”   and “Queen For A Day: The Girl’s Guide To Chess Mastery.”  Both books are available on Amazon.com.  Both books are endorsed by chess masters!

-If you are serious about chess, I highly recommend you hiring a chess coach to help you.

-Also consider all checks and captures on your side and also your opponent’s side. Always as, “If I move here, where is my opponent going to move?”. Do this for every single move!

-Play with a slow time control, such as G/30 so you have plenty of time to think before every move.
