The Ruy lopez

The Ruy Lopez ( in my opinion is a very steady opening and is good for beginners to play) any feedback would be great. Thanks!

It’s spelt Ruy Lopez.
Yup it should be perfectly fine. For those actually treading on this path and studying the lines, the main lines (the “Closed” Ruy Lopez) occur rarely at the beginner levels and you should focus instead on the other “sidelines” (Classical, pseudo-Berlin, Steinitz, etc).

Roy Lopez is not a good opening for beginners. The best "first" opening for beginners is the Italian Game.

But there are several openings and defences suitable for beginners.

Many of the 2nd tier openings are excellent choices.

2nd tier openings, like the Scotch, Reti, Center Counter, Catalan, Pirc, Bishop's Opening, Vienna Game, to name a few, are good.

The 2nd tier openings don't see a lot if grandmaster play because its easier for grandmasters to draw. Plus your less likely to find an opoonent well versed in 2nd tier openings.

One book suggests

as a way to get an easier sort of Lopez.

7 hours ago, most Americans we're either sleeping, or getting ready for bed.

I'm fairly certain Kindaspongey was sleeping 3 hours ago. By now, he's most likely stuck in traffic going to work.

The Ruy Lopez?

Seems a bit difficult. For example, I have the book starting out e4 (it's commonly said that e4 is the place for a beginner's development) and it advises the Scotch to avoid a lot of theory. I also have mastering the chess openings in which I have looked up the Ruy, and it seems a decent understanding of it requires at least a half-decent understanding of things like the Italian game and the two knights.

So I'm going with the Scotch. However, I still want to learn the Ruy Lopez as black long term, which involves learning the open games and white's other options. Seems like missions, or a longer term project.

As a kid I played the Petrov defense a lot.

Definitely of interest. Thanks.

Oh also starting out open games seems good, and the focus seems to be on playing as black. Doesn't cover the Ruy Lopez though but seems good for a beginner looking to give e5 a go.
