As the other guy pointed out, you're definitely not a beginner based off of the amount of games you've played, as well as being rated 1600. 

Obviously ur not playing in the 1200 bracket, because you're rated about 400 pts higher. However the move 16. Bd3 is a pretty shocking blunder. 

But for my opponent to let that happen is quite shocking

But without 16. Bd3 being played, we would not have discovered that symmetrical checkmate.
